  • Ask if there is a clinical need for it. If so, ask why it is not included in your NHS treatment plan.

If you are in England, A scale and polish should be included in the basic examination price of £18.

    http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/dentists/Pages/nhs-dental-charges.aspx
    Band 1 course of treatment – £18.00
This covers an examination, diagnosis (including X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, a scale and polish if needed, and application of fluoride varnish or fissure sealant.

Although you go to a "NHS dentist", many no longer accept NHS patients and you have to pay as a private patient.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

'Scale and polish?' is the first phrase dentists learn at med school ;)

As the OP is not paying for the check up, he clearly is being treated as an NHS patient.

The dentist will give you a quick clean.

The hygienist will spend a lot more time and effort on your teeth and it should be around £19.

If you need 2 fillings, its in the second band of about £49 whether you have one filling or 10

He doesn't say he isn't paying for a check up.
