Faulty Tesco Toaster

Our cheapo Tesco toaster has gone kaput 13 months after purchase.I know it was cheap, but returned it to the store just in case. The young lad was worse than useless and even inferred that had I purchased a more expensive model it would have lasted longer. This really got my back up and quoted the SOGA - yep, that really got him going!! Anyway, wrote a funny letter to Head Office bemoaning the fact that I was no longer able to enjoy my Sunday toast and they have just called to say that they were sending a £10 gift voucher to cover the cost. Thanks Tosco. Only thing is, what would have happened had I bought a £200 model? Anyway, the missus bought a nearly new one in the charity shop for £2.00 so toast all round

I presume when you quoted SOGA you had an independent report to back up an inherent fault?0 -

And whats useless about that?
Goods should last a reasonable length of time - but whats reasonable depends on a range of factors.....including price paid. You simply wouldn't expect a £10 microwave to last as long as a £200 one.
To use a well known phrase.....you get what you pay for.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

You would have received a proportionate refund - this is Tesco policy for out of warranty electrical items.0 -
Buy cheap buy twice!0

Thanks for all those replies! Actually, the average life of a toaster is about 5 1/2 years so 13 months is not a reasonable period of time for it to last. Your comments about buying a more expensive product is absolute c***! - as had I bought the £30 model, for example, (which is also made in China) and it had only lasted the same time, I would still not have any rights as it would be out of warranty! The point I was making was that Tesco has done the decent thing and has OBVIOUSLY agreed with me! Many thanks, Tesco.0

Just read your post jacques chirac and you are WRONG. Tesco policy, according to my local store, is that out of warranty is out of warranty. One day, one week, one month - no return! I suggest that we now rename this site MoneySPENDINGexpert.Cheers0

Can you post a link to this please? I find it highly doubtful that the average life of a cheap toaster is 5.5 years.
I also doubt Tescos agreed with you, they were more likely have been giving you the voucher to get rid of you.. its cheaper than dealing with the complaint.0 -

You are mistaking the warranty for your legal rights. If you actually followed SOGA by proving the fault was inherent you would have got a proportionate refund.0 -

Something is of satisfactory quality if it meets the standards a reasonable person would regard as acceptable taking into account the description, the price and any other relevant circumstances.
The above is what the SoGA says. So you may think we're wrong and price is irrelevant when deciding the lifespan of goods but UK law does not agree with you.
A higher price tag induces higher expectations. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Ok- losing the will to live. Out of interest, how long does a toaster last, then? Let's compare a Morphy Richards and a Dualit?
How can one tell how long a product will last? According to the Which? magazine the average age of a toaster is 5 1/2 years.0
