Friendly warning about next gen consoles

Options
It's been all over the gaming community this morning that some people who have recieved their PS4s early have experienced problems and faults with the console. Obviously some teething issues are to be expected but just a warning to anyone getting it day one: do not throw away any of the paperwork that comes with the console. Your warranty may prove to be invaluable if you recieve a faulty system and I'd hate to see people paying hundreds of pounds for a bricked console before even getting a chance to play it or to get it replaced.

"PS4 Bricking: Early PS4 Issues And How To Fix Them

    Ryan King

OS issues have been discovered before release but Reddit has already discovered a way to fix bricked PS4 consoles.

    Published on Nov 14, 2013

Early reports of PS4 not working have surfaced, with the main issue appearing to be related to the PS4 OS, bricking PS4 consoles.

The issue appears to be that despite the blue pulse appearing when the console is switched on, the PS4 won't load.
    Ad-break

The PS4 hasn't gone on sale yet, so these are isolated incidents restricted to the few PS4s that have gone out pre-release to media and competition winners.

Incredibly, despite these issues being discovered ahead of the PS4's release and Sony refusing support (as the console isn't official on sale yet), a fix has already been discovered by Reddit.

To fix a bricked PS4, you have to take the following steps:

    Unplug your HDD
Boot the console without the HDD - it will load Safe Mode and ask for a HDD
Switch off, plug in the HDD and boot the console
PS4 will load into safe mode and you can recover the necessary OS data

We won't know until launch how widespread these issues are, nor how effective this fix will be in zapping all those problems, but it's still worrying that reports of PS4's bricking have reared their head so close to the official US console launch this Friday."

As per usual, I see that there are issues with the PS4 due to a huge lack of pre-release testing.
I predict that as Microsoft are also in a rush to get their console out there, there will be a lot of people reporting crash-issues with their shiny XBox Ones.

The main lesson to learn is to never, ever buy a next-gen console until at least 6 months after launch. This gives the manufacturer a chance to fix all the issues & apply upgrades to the hardware & software.

To be honest I don't think Microsoft have rushed this one, I think the PS4 has been push early due to the Xbox.

THe other thing I find concerning is the cooling setup on the PS4, the Xbox one looks far better on this, yes the console is bigger but a bit more breathing room can't be a bad thing.

Will be interesting to see how it goes with these next gen consoles thats for sure.

Rumours say that the Xbox was primed for March and brought to Nov due to PS4.

  • or....they're both being released for the Christmas rush?!?
Knowledge is a tool, and like all tools, its impact is in the hands of the user.
  • From what I've seen throughout the day it's affected maybe 8 out of 2000 consoles that are already out there. So not very much at all but still you could get unlucky so it's good practice to keep the warranty safe.

I'm not worried about my day one console having any issues, I'm sure it'll be fine by then :)

I don't think they're being rushed, they'll have been in development for ages.
