The £1 was processed and appeared in my new account. I then transferred a larger amount (well under the £25,000 daily amount limit) and Halifax have put a stop on the transfer and advised that the transaction is "under review".

Halifax seem very hot on checking transfers. Even now with my account open 6 months I cannot transfer money to a new payee without getting an auth code on my phone. Good that they are up on their security but can be a pain at times.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

All new payees need a code verifying by phone.

I don't think it's anything to do with ID checks or money laundering.

They can open some accounts on line and do everything electronically.

It's so the advisers can cross sell - these are usually loss leader products and the poor banks have to make a few pennies after all!

    ^^^^^^^^^ that.

All I wanted was a JISA. I was a 30 year customer. Went in to branch with all the documentation they could possibly require. Managed to get a walk in appointment.

You just need to keep telling the advisor/spotty youth that you don't want anything else other than the JISA. You may need to say it 11 or 12 times.......maybe even write it on a piece of A4 and hold it up every time he tries to steer the conversation towards a cross sell.

It must cost them about 1,000 times more to open an account in person than for me to do it online.

It's a minor inconvenience, but no big deal -- HSBC make you do magic numbers on your key-fob-calculator gizmo instead to prove it's really you, but only when you first set up the payment.

My only gripe with the Halifax system -- the incoming message seems to have been constructed by the FoneJacker :) .... "booop".

"Please key in the four digit number on your screen NOW" (takes phone from ear to type) ".... alternatively press something else to do something else ....." (waits for ... another "now" ? Oh you want the number now do you? Righty ho ...)

Don't say NOW unless you've finished. When you've finished, say NOW. Simple!

    I know.

I'm more amazed that having to book one wee appointment provoked such a long rant.
