What about a nicely wrapped scarf?. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

A scented candle. Boots have some for £5 in a tin. They smell divine and look expensive.0

Not sure if this is trendy enough but M&S have nice wrapped boxes of chocolates down to half price around £5-6 (might find them with the xmas tins of biscuits but the wrapping is occasion-neutral)0

I picked this up for my nan as an add-on to her Christmas presents, I've given similar bath sets in the past and she loves them as they look quite posh, a bit more of a treat than her usual products

here you go for some ideas -

baylis and harding sets are often half price in the Co-op, Lloyds pharmacies, Argos etc.

lots of toiletry sets in Tesco half price atm.
My ex m-I-l loves 'simple' and I got her a nice set for her birthday for a fiver. And I did check and it worked out cheaper to get the set than but the items separately.0 -
To move completely away from smellies:
I got a classy looking bird feeder from Aldi for £4.99 (allegedly squirrel proof). I can't find a picture but it's shaped like an old-fashioned bird cage. I'm going to get one for a friend for Christmas with a bag of National Trust brand birdseed from the £ shop.
If she has a garden, perhaps she'd like that.0 -
I really like the Laura Ashley things in Boots at the moment - the pen is gorgeous, and the fridge jotter.
They are a bit more than a fiver, but if you can find 3 things to buy on the 3for2 offer that would make it better value. I don't know if you have enough money for that, but if you could get two christmas presents alongside it that might work out okay. I used my boots points to get some.
If you have any tesco clubcard points it may be worth seeing what's in the 'boost' offer at the moment because you can double the value of your vouchers.52% tight0 -
Thanks everyone
She would have loved the birdfeeder but doesn't have a garden, however I know someone who would like that for christmas hopefully they will still have some in next week.
I popped into tesco as no car parking charge there
I got a simple gift set in a nice bag for £3.50 (half price) and some half price chocolates for £1.50. Looks a nice little gift certainly more than £5 worth especially if I wrap it up pretty.
I don't know if its just me but I as lovely as the boots stuff is I refuse to buy just one item as I know I am paying over the odds when its 3 for 2 and unfortunately I don't have the spare cash to get anything else, bad time of the month all my Direct debits come out tomorrow and I only found out about the birthday yesterday.0 -
My local market had some quite nice looking scarfs for £5. And some pashmina type things for abit more. With some posh looking wrapping paper and a bow it could look fairly upmarket x0
