Growing strawberries in a wooden barrel and last weekend put some shredded newspaper under the fruit to prevent rotting. Whilst putting the paper in i noticed two almost ripe strawberries but they both had been eaten - perfect circular holes . My gfd reckons damaged caused by slugs and I should have used straw instead as the slugs don't like it

My fruit has been excellent, first crop of strawberries are almost eaten, second crop of a variety called Maxim are blinkin huge http://www.bakker.co.uk/Catalog/Productdetail.aspx?parentcategoryname=16&selectedcategoryname=25&productid=1554&R=1554-011
thanks to all the rain we have had.

Maxim is a variey I recommend, even a poor crop produces large fruit by default, they are disease free and very tasty.

Raspberries are just starting to go red, blackberries haven't fruited yet and my ancient cooking apple tree has the largest crop of apples I have ever seen.

It is destined to be a great year for fruit.

Me neither, but it def wasn't birds or slugs and small humans denied it - they wouldn't have left half anyway so it was either fox or squirrel!

I bought a strawb seedling, it's only just getting buds!

My mum has a well established patch and says that she and my dad have to eat some every day just to keep the crop down. (She's made buckets of strawb ice cream too!)
