PAC code tmobile credit stolen?

Options
My mom recently got a contract with O2 and wanted to keep her phone number. I dutifully rang up tmobile with her on a Saturday and requested a PAC code.
They mentioned that the credit would expire - I assumed they meant on the day the number transferred as this is what has happened every time I have done this same thing.
In fact, her number transferred on the Tuesday, and her £15 of credit was taken on the Saturday evening!

Surely this is disgraceful? She had to receive texts on one phone and reply on another for 3 days because she didn't have any way of replying on her old tmobile phone. Not only that, whatever was left, which would have been around £14, she was going to donate to children in need on the Monday.

Is this right? In my experience other companies take on the day the number transfers? Surely it's stealing!

Since the porting process takes 1 working day minimum, the cut-off may be when o2 initiate the port (which was presumably Friday), not when it completes?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
