High ish mileage in a new car

Looking at a new car, it's a 12 reg 62 plate so it's just turned a year old, when buying cars before I've gone by 10,000 miles a year on average.

This car is 62 reg but has nearly 22,000 miles I'm presuming its an ex rental and have been down to look at the car but haven't test driven it yet. Spotless inside and out. I have brought my current car from this place so no problems with the dealer.

So basically is this going to be a problem further down the line with it having covered quite a high mileage quite early on in its life. It's a petrol by the way so no DPF worries.

Thanks in advance :T

  • 22K high mileage????

The last car I sold was still running quite happily at 310,000 miles and the new owner managed to get it to 355,000 before it snapped a timing belt.

If it's been serviced on time, then recorded mileage is the least of your concern.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Unless you know the previous driver(s) you wont have a clue how the clutch has been treated.

If they hammered it away from every set of traffic lights then it may fail earlier than expected.

But it may last longer. No way of knowing.

The same applies to any secondhand car.

You're not reading DPF as DMF by any chance are you? Otherwise that's a massive leap from the original question :)

22k miles easily done by anyone who lives out in the country and drives to town for work.

I would have thought rentals would be less miles because every time Ive rented vehicles for very simple and straightforward trips and special occasions. Never to drive to birmingham and back for instance.

As long as it has been serviced, drives as it should and the price reflects the highish mileage for the age then you have no issues.

I just bought a 61plate Jaguar XJ LWB which isn't 2 years old till the end of the month and it had just under 90k on it, a couple of weeks later I have put on another 2500 miles.

If the deal and car are right go for it.
  • 22k is nowhere near high mileage.

If you had said 62 plate with 70k on, I would have agreed with you :)

Lets assume the car has been only used for work -

    48 working weeks a year = 458 miles a week (22,000/48)

Per day the mileage based on 5 day working week is 91.6 (458/5)

So that is an each way commute of 45.8 miles.

IMO that is very reasonable. Around here (Berks) there are plenty of people that make that kind of commute. Probably many many cars out there at this age with that kind of mileage.

Pick up the phone and ask them how many keepers and drivers it has had and why does it have a higher than average mileage. Don't assume it's a bargain.
