The reason we got the boiler sorted (it did give hot water just no heating) was because we are in the process of selling. otherwise we would have probably carried on with the plug in ones.
That's cool, think we're gonna get some oil filled ones too. We're in the same position as we have hot water, just no heating. To be honest I thought plumbers would have jumped at doing the boiler as it's so much money, maybe it's too much hassle or something.0 -
Not had the same with plumbers (I used a friends relative to redo my central heating) but I have had this problem with several workmen to the point I nearly wrote a thread like yours! I've had no call backs, people not turning up, people not getting back with quotes. Either the housing market is well and truly has improved or these people aren't interested in work.
Good luck!
Same here - with all trades except our sparky who is brilliant
We thought it was a result of moving out to the countryside - initially we assumed the local tradesmen would be quiet business-wise by comparison to those in the city and would be keen to get work, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Almost every local guy we've been in touch with has either not turned up to quote, not sent out a quote or not bothered to show up having got the job
Our sparky isn't local, in fact he's a city boy now living in the suburbs about 45 minutes from us, and he too has noticed the difference in attitude between city and more *rural* tradesmen
Once you do find someone reliable, you just have to hold onto them for dear life......not literally, lol!Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

I'll be holding on to anyone for body warmth soon. Know what you mean though, can't say the electrician we used was great. But at least they completed the job on time and on cost. The £4533 bloke said he was very busy, maybe all these all just don't have the time, but why waste time turning up to have a look?0

simple straight out, straight in replacements are an easy days work, and at the moment they can get top prices and pick which jobs to do as people are desperate to get the heating on.
they turn up at your house, and its going to be a messy, hard day or 2 and they can make more cash by doing 2 simple jobs.
unfortunately you're a victim of timing.0 -

Yea I see what you mean, I've got quote no 11 coming tomorrow, so will see what he says as he just put a new boiler in for a work colleague. If not, gonna convince my wife to hold out til after after the winter.0 -
This is on Radio 4 at the moment. A couple in Cumbria tried about 20 plumbers before resorting to placing an advert for one in the local paper!!0

Just go for British Gas.
Proper price, it'll be a proper job, and guaranteed.
Buy cheap - Buy twiceI work in the 'moving industry'. My frame of reference is around 20 years and circa 27,000 domestic moves.0 -
Are these Gas Safe (formerly Corgi) registered plumbers?0

They are all gas safe, I've checked them all out before they come round.
Plumber 5 was from British gas and he wanted about £4600 just just install boiler, no radiators and no magnetic filter. He told us you don't need a filter cos after flush out the radiators will be free of debris, but surely they're still going to corrode over time and that will end up going through the boiler.0
