Small, loud and cheap - we're not in the realms of HiFi, so can you use a transducer? Rather than vibrating a cine of paper, you firmly attach them to something they can vibrate like a window, table or locker. They are significantly louder than the equivalent size of speaker! Sound fidelity won't be as high and we'll vary with what you hook it onto, but if you're in a noisy environment you're never going to get great sound anyway, and this will be a good enough alternative, and extremely small.0

If you want to hear music over the ambient noise, wouldn't a pair of over-ear headphones be a better bet?0

It is 30W, is it loud enough? I can't though of other set with this small size and volume.
Or you should get headphone as speaker can disturb your colleague. I would say something like AKG K451/K452 or Sennheiser PX100-II/ PX200-II.0 -
The XMI mini's are great little things, USB chargeable. For work though, I'd suggest a decent pair of earphones/headphones Sennheiser, Denon, AKG etc.0

Try the Creative T10 or T20, big sound for the size.0

T20 is only 28W, and is more expensive & double of size than SoundScience QSB.0 -
If you want something really powerful, I'd recommend getting a SH 'integrated amplifier' and bookshelf speakers.
It's easy to get an amp and bookshelves for under £30 that will whip any store bought system under £150, including the PC set ups.
Wattage wise, you'd commonly be looking at about 50w per side. Plenty enough for an office, smallish party etc.
Amp: Cambridge audio A1, Rotel etc.
Speakers: Eltax, Denon, Cerwin Vega etc.
Would link to some auctions but can't post links yet.
Only issue is finding a seller close to you, because P&P can be a pain!

Also, have used the units (Wowee, etc) that you attach to a table, window etc and they're not worth the money at all.
Also worth remembering that watts/vs SPL (volume) is not linear: a doubling in wattage gives approx an extra 3db, which is about 25% louder.
So to get twice as powerful as an XMI mini, you'd be looking at around 10-15w, and that's ignoring physical distortion, parts rattling etc.

With outstanding sound clarity and volume, the SoundScience QSB feature DyadUSB technology for 15W per channel audio from just 2.5W of power.
