When I was a kid, my Nan had an electric bedwarmer. It looked like a flying saucer and it plugged into the lightbulb socket above the bed.

I've used the gel bottle that you put in the microwave for a few minutes too. I had one when I had my gall stone as it was good for the pain. Unfortunately my husband put it in the microwave for too long & it began to leak. I bought 2 more from Lidl for just £3.99 each. I've used them smelly things with herbs in too, but after a while they absolutely stink! So I'd swear by Jel Gel as I call it.

The one my mum has is the one second from top. Similar anyway, she calls it a pig, always going on about how great it is. She doesnt have a hot man either, although we both have cats. Only one of my cats likes going under the covers, but hes a bit of a lanky long legs, not a tub of lard like my other ginger tom (who sleeps in the living room because he keeps trying to hit the other one)

As I type two of my cats are sitting on the couch having a cuddle to keep warm, must be trying to drop me a hint that its time to put the heating on.
  • I always feel the cold and friends know that and happily provide blankets for me if I feel chilly! Two friends houses are big and cold even with heating on so I layer up well when going there, like they do too!

Unless the person was very strapped for cash like on benefits/low waged or a student I'd just tell them straight that I was too cold in their house and could they either come to mine or we meet in a pub or for a bite to eat etc or I would come if they heated the house.
Obviously if the person couldnt afford the heating then I would either stay a short amout of time or again get them to come to mine or meet in a pub.
It is difficult though asking certain people. I had a friend who kept saying how warm her house was but I was freezing and it was that cold my legs used to go numb. She wasnt poor just really tight.
It did put me off going and I just stayed for a short time.
OP if you are cold your cold, you could also suggest waiting till the springtime before visting their house.

We always called it a Jack ........never heard it called a Pig.....My Mum was from Ireland tho so maybe it's regional - I think I'd rather pop Jack in my bed than a pig in my bed though !!!!!!

That is all very well but how would you know. Some people don't discuss their financial situation - it isn't only the unwaged or students who can be struggling financially so are afraid to turn their heating on.

I wouldn't discuss my financial situation with a "friend" who talked about other people being "poor" .....but then I wouldn't invite someone that judgmental to my house anyway.

OTH this thread is a great inspiration to get rid of unwelcome visitors who stay too long-Freeze em out !! ;)

Its true you dont always know, however with my friends I know if they are struggling or not because of what they say.

On the subject of stone hot water bottles, My Grandma had one and it was brown and oblong shaped. I remember being frightened of it as a child.

Inspired by this thread I bought an electric blanket today, 20 quid from home bargains, silentnight and my mums even thinking of getting one as well.
