Yorks Bank - wish I hadn`t bothered

Just wondered if anyone else is having difficulties opening the Yorkshire Bank current account direct?
You can`t apply properly online but have to wait for them to phone you. Because I was out when they called I had to phone them back - as it was a joint account they wouldn`t deal with just me so I had to phone again when husband was home. I stupidly didn`t ask them to phone me so heaven knows how much the call cost as it took almost an hour for them to take all the details.
Then we got a letter giving the account number & saying we must register for internet banking - using the `enclosed leaflet` which would tell us how to register - there was no enclosed leaflet.
So I`ve just phoned them again & been told I can`t register for internet banking until I pay some money into the account - why couldn`t the letter say this? After doing this I must phone them AGAIN. I`ve just transferred £10 to the account - I don`t trust them enough to pay in any more at this stage. Will try to phone again tomorrow
Is it just me?!

Yes, I have been through the same rigmarole, just waiting for the Internet banking letter now. If you have an iPhone or Android phone you can install the banking app and register without anything more than some of your known information so that might tide you over - though it only allows you to see transactions and transfer between accounts with the bank.

I'm not too bothered though, because you have to jump through these hoops once and when the account is open it should be pretty plain sailing.

There are 0800 numbers available for account opening - you can ring them. The saynoto0870 website is very useful here.

I rang the bank this evening using the 0844 number (then I later found the national number)

I wanted to register for online banking and after giving loads of details the customer service assistant said she needed to ask a security question which could be about recent transactions. I said that I hadn't made any yet! This was the wrong answer. I was told that I should not have said anything until the security question was asked and now as I had already told her that there had been no transactions she would have to end the call and that I would have to ring again and the next time I was told I needed to answer a security question I should wait to hear it.

    What a farce.

But I transferred £10 in by faster payments and so when I rang again I was able to say I had made a transaction - after waiting for the security question before saying so.

This was farcical again - as the assistant wanted to know the name of the account holder that the payment was from and I said that it was exactly the same on both accounts and gave my first name, middle name and surname. After about 3 times of her asking the same thing she asked who was 'middle name and surname', saying that is what I had told her originally. I said that I had only ever told her the three names, that both were my accounts (yet again) and the names were identical. She didn't seem convinced I was the same person at all :(

However, I now have a 4 digit security code which I used later so I could confirm that the £10 was really in the account before transferring any more

    such fun....not

You don't have to make any deposit to pass that question. The correct answer then is apparently "zero pounds" (note, not just "zero", or "I haven't deposited anything yet" - - zero pounds.)

Freefone for CB and YB CS: 0800-234-6550, 0800-202-1221. They'll probably insist on giving you an 0844 number "for future use" but they do put you through, so best to just thank them for the 0844 number.

The problem was that I hadn't been asked the security question at that point - she just told me that I would be asked a question about my recent transactions, and in my ignorance I told her I hadn't made any...it was as if her computer was listening and said 'not playing' as she said she couldn't now progress the call to the security questions.

The point I was asking for clarification on, quite genuinely, was what are you all talking about.:o
There is no explanation in the thread.:o
I have now researched and found out - for the benefit of anyone else in the same position I was- Yorkshire Bank have launched a new current account (called 'Direct') that is paying 4% on credit balances up to £3000 provided the account is funded from external sources with £1000 per month. :T
That was all I wanted to know.:)
Anyone interested go to Yorkshire Bank website for full details.:D
