just got back from speeking to my dentist. i took one tablet about 3/4 hour before i went as i was feeling soooo anxous. i must admit that it didnt even take the edge off what i was feeling. good job i had my mum there to translate for me ( too much sobbing!)
she says she dosent know how to deal with me and that nothing is showing up on the xrays and she dosent want to start digging around with the nerves so she is going to refer me to the hospital dentists.
she said in the mean time i should see the doctor as she thinks there is an underlying problem that has just manifested itself in my extream reaction to having this work done.
    i really dont know.
when i went to the docs the other day and she gave me the diazepam to take before treatment, she just commentated on the fact that i had had 3 children....... not alot of help.
i think at this precise moment in time i would rather give birth to 10lb twins - no pain relief than go through all this at the dentist!!!!!!! x:eek:

Hi is there any chance your problem could be caused by you clenching your teeth/grinding?

When my eldest was a baby I was getting a lot of pain in my upper molar. Had x-rays - nothing, was very tense and sobbed in the chair. My dentist is very good (been going to him for 20plus years) - was about to drill tooth and then said I don't want to do this - not sure it is right. Anyhow was referred and turns out I was clenching my teeth in my sleep (baby poor sleeper). I had a bite guard and things improved. I still grind my teeth now if I am very stressed.

I have had diazepam in 2mg and think it works more as a placebo. Not sure how it builds up in your system but I found I did not notice any effect until I had taken it 3 times a day for a couple of days.

Good luck and have a hug.

2mg is much too small a dose to do anything if you are really panicky. I take 5mg in the morning and then another 5mg 30 mins before seeing dentist. If it is something really bad then I take 10 mg and get really spaced out which is great (not sure my poor husband who accompanys me thinks so).

It is the only thing that works for me and I have been doing this for over 20 years because as soon as I sit in the chair I burst into tears and cant stop crying.

I have never taken valium(diazepam) at any other nor wanted to.

oh my god yes, i am a really bad teeth grinder. i grit and grind at them all the time, especially when i am asleep, and feeling stressed. i know i have been doing it alot lately because of all the anxiety i am feeling. thankyou, that will give me something else to ask them when i go to the hospital. x
  • I thought I was nervous of the dentist because after treatment I would got home and shake as if I had a fever. One dentist recommended valium, but that didn't work. I switched dentists and was told that I might need an injection without cocaine in it, because the most common injection increases your adrenaline, something you could do without if you are already hyped up. Sure enough, from that day on I haven't had a single bad visit to the dentist. It's just a suggestion, but if you feel in a bad way AFTER your treatment, it might be worthwhile having a word about a different anaesthetic.
