When I had a diazepam it made me feel totally spaced out and completely relaxed. People who take it before a visit to the dentist might need someone to accompany them. HTH

Mattsue, have a look at this http://www.nmhct.nhs.uk/Pharmacy/anx1.htm
but please remember the list of side effects is aimed at people who are on a course of Diazepam, not just the odd one or two to get them through a visit to the dentist. HTH

it's regularly given in hospitals before patients go for surgery - to calm pre op nerves

untrue i'm afraid. no anaesthetist i know gives diazepam pre-op.

Sorry but i have had it on several occasions in the past and it didnt help me one bit! I think the adrenaline in my body just overcame it , no relaxed feeling or anything .

From experience if you are realy afraid of the dentist,a small dose of valium can actually make you feel worse, and you can become more agitated. If you can't get total sedation I realy think self hypnosis is brilliant.I use it all the time for my dentist fear and never need to be sedated now.You can be taught it in a couple of sessions and it realy is worth the effort.

Take the Diazepam. It's been prescribed by your GP correctly for a very valid reason. It will probably help, (no one, not even your GP can say for sure!:p ) and will not do you any harm as a 'one off'.

The problem with Diazepam is that it is VERY addictive when taken regularly for a relatively short period of time. GP's will not usually give most patients more than 2 weeks supply at a time for that reason, but used on a occasional basis for stressful events such as dental treatment, flying etc. it is very helpful. You do have to be very sensible and strong willed with it however, and just make sure you use it only occasionally when necessary.

IMHO it's grrreat:D Just like a 'big hug', and in my experience makes you really not care what is going on around you in a stressful situation.

HTH, and very best wishes to you.

PS How many mg have you been prescribed? A 2mg tablet is a tiny dose, 5mg is 'average', but the max dose is 60mg is per day!!! My point is a small dose is nowhere near the max recommended dose.
