Still don't get it. The whole point of "money laundering" is to disguise money that comes from crime/dodgy dealing as money that comes from legitimate sources. How would buying and selling a phone achieve that, they may just as well pay the cash direct into their account.jacques_chirac wrote: »Dirty money paid to retailer - phone resold - clean money transferred to launderer. Another common purchase for this reason is gift vouchers (I have no idea if any retailers limit their purchase).
Anyone looking into their dealings would just ask "where did the phone come from" instead of "where did the cash come from", and if they can't show where the phone came from it would likely make them look even more dodgy! And regularly selling high value items would likely arouse suspicion.0 -
Simple you use money that you have stolen ( may be marked) or counterfeit notes to purchase the phone, so now the retailer has the dirty money. you then sell the phone on ebay and get clean money.Still don't get it. Although I agree this is a possible reason it's not actually money laundering.

You haven't actually addressed the problem at all. :rotfl:There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I see what you mean, but "money laundering" doesn't usually refer to money which is literally dirty (ie counterfeit or marked), it usually refers to normal cash but which has come from dodgy dealings/crime.earthstorm wrote: »Simple you use money that you have stolen ( may be marked) or counterfeit notes to purchase the phone, so now the retailer has the dirty money. you then sell the phone on ebay and get clean money.0 -

It's obviously a question to the OP about what they think of their purchase. Although off topic it's still about the OP's item so I don't think it's worth being arsey about it!
Looking back at the post I actually totally misread it as a fanboy post rather than a straight question, so apologies to Widelats for that

for the OP - Three do have some weird policies, but for mobile phones you always get better deals from carphone warehouse or phones4u then going direct to a mobile operator0 -

I don't think you understand completely what dirty money and clean money is. Dirty money is not forged money, it's money obtained through illegal activities eg drug dealing.
You don't launder money because the original money was forged you do it to hide the origin of the original money. That is money laundering. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
