I would say 58 plates are oldish.
Why does the company want to do a diagnostics check for £68? If the gear box is out what good will that do? Tell you the gear box is out?

    Yes.

The reason being they are not under manufacturers warranty and are too old to be stocked by main dealers in any significant quantity.

Go to a big auction and you will find main dealers selling anything more than a few years old and with above average miles.

But a 5 yr old car isn't old enough to be considered old.

If you consider a car now worth a quarter of its original cost and likely to now be maintained by the owner or an independant garage or chain then that is fine.

But remember that cars are no longer engineered to last much beyond 10 or 15 yrs which is why they are now more and more recycleable.

My wifes Clio is a 2006 and i would consider that old. My new car is 2 yrs old snd i consider that newish.

If he tells them that say bye bye to any repair work...

They could blame him for causing the damage by still using it when there was an obvious defect.

Subsequent damage wont be covered. If a minor fault was the initial problem but he carried on using it which caused other parts to fail then its his fault.

Be careful what you say. And you need to find what the actual problem is.. Has a mount failed or has something else failed?

    Whats wrong with it now?

My point exactly, I do not consider a 58 plate car to be oldish! I am not sure what the problem is, my son had to be towed home and he tells me there is a hole underneath the car and the breakdown man told him he needs a new gearbox. Aside from how much it will cost, surely a car that has just been purchased should not breakdown. He may be a young driver but surely he wouldn't cause that much damage in so little time. As he's a young driver, is it reasonable to assume he caused the car abuse?

Why not? When you buy a used car any potential problems don't just reset themselves. Why do people seem to think second hand goods shouldn't show signs of wear for the first x weeks !?! :s

On topic though, does sound like a weird ol predicament.

£2k for a gearbox sounds very very high!........... You can pickup recon boxes for about £250.... not sure on brand new but can't imagine it being vastly more expensive. Labour probably a full day or two.... shouldn't be more than £500.

You wanna be pressing this warranty company a bit more, sounds like they are trying to diddle him.

If the car come with a warranty it would be reasonable to expect a resolution that didn't involve you effectively paying the full market rate for a remedy because of their ridiculous rates.

This is a 2008 Diesel Astra, not a 1999 Corsa.
A second hand gearbox in my 2006 Ibiza diesel is around £400 to buy on it's own, second hand and not reconditioned.
Most companies usually charge around £300+ to recondition a modern gearbox without the cost of buying one that doesn't have a hole it in, then the fitting costs to mix

That noise you describe almost certainly sounds like a faulty bearing or two.

One of the main causes on the vauxhall gearbox i suspect it's been driven hard or towed in it's life.

A re map and driven like rally car the box fails.

As we don't know how the car was driven and certianly have no idea if it has been mapped it isn't fair on the OP or his son to keep saying such things.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
