Backdating of a Pay Rise?

Hi there
Just looking for some opinion on this matter.
I currently have a full time permanent job, and have been there for about 10 months. On my contract, it states (and I will show the exact wording):
SALARY REVIEW: After 6 months of employment based on the results of the appraisal.
So, 6 months came and went and I heard nothing about this appraisal. I asked my manager and they said they would set a date as soon as possible. Since then it's kept ticking over and ticking over and I still haven't had this appraisal.
I now have a specific date for this in 2 weeks time. What I want to know is, when I get this appraisal I'm fairly sure I'll be getting a pay rise of some variety, will I be able to demand that this pay rise is backdated to the 6 month point? As I feel I'm being kind of shafted in all this since I could've been paid more for longer had the company got their act together.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

You can't demand anything. If you do, you won't do yourself any favours. You can politely ask.
Don't expect a pay rise. It's not mandatory. They may say that your appraisal isn't up to scratch and therefore you aren't getting one.

Thanks for your response!
I understand that a payrise is not mandatory, however in my line of work and current position, I know that I will be receiving one - the likelihood of a pay increase is not part of my question.
The question is: do you not think that, from a legal (or even moral) standpoint, it was the company's duty to fulfil this appraisal at the 6 month point as clearly stated on the contract?
I won't be raising my concerns in this department until the level of the pay increase has been determined and put through, I just want to know where I stand when it does.
Many thanks0 -

You should have been self reviewing and getting performance feed back during the 6 months and asking when the pay rise review meeting would be.
I would consider asking for the review based on the 6 month point.0 -

Thank you. This is an accurate reflection of the situation as I did have a number of reviews during the 6 month period. My performance has been noted to be outstanding which is why it feels like delaying the actual *important* review is a bit of a dirty trick.0 -
They could just let you go if you appear to be awkward.
Again, this is certainly true - but not the question.
I am wondering about the company's position in terms of having stated that this should be given after 6 months, and then not following through. Are they obligated by this contract to have observed this? And thus, are they required to recompense for not having done so?0 -

I wouldn't be raising any concerns to be honest, within your first two years, you have no protection employment wise and they can just as easily say to you, we don't need you any more.
Don't be too confident about getting a pay rise, you have no idea of the company finances so treat it as a bonus if you do.
Just a little thought, you are coming over on here a little pompous to be honest. Just thank your lucky stars you actually have a job and you will get on fine.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You need to think of the bigger picture, as the posters here are trying to help you do. Whether this is your question or not.
How good is a back-dated pay rise if it costs you your job? You have little security in the first 2 years of employment so aside from a couple of friendly emails if they say no then that will be that.Thinking critically since 1996....0
