blinded by car head lights

hi all, I ride a motorbike, now the nights have come in im riding in the dark,
I have to ride on a 7 mile road with no street lights however some of the car lights from approaching traffic blinds me, either the lights are bright or they are not dipping full beam.

Is there something I can fit to my helmet or use in the dark to help with this problem?

thanks

  • Xenons have that effect especially on 4x4 - one tactic of which I have heard that sounds dangerous but still is that if the other driver does not dip their lights don't dip yours

See your optician and get your eyes rechecked.

Sometimes it can be Xenons but a lot of times it's poorly adjusted headlights. 99% of people don't use the headlight adjusters on their car when loaded.

no different from drivers in cars being dazzled by motorbikes who ride with really bright headlights all the time!

This may sound daft, but I got this tip off my grandfather for preserving night vision, a trick he learnt in the Army - close one eye. You'll preserve the night vision in that eye so when the car has gone past you will still have reasonable night vision.

If you're going to state stuff like this and try and get the OP off to his optician for a probably pointless check, you ought to say why you think there's a problem. I get dazzled the same way at times and there's nothing wrong with my eyes (I have yearly checks due to my work).
  • I am a newish car driver and I am having similar issues with other vehicles headlight glare! (both motorbike and car). Not sure how I can overcome this either, but I have made an opticians appointment to double check there is nothing wrong with my eyesight.

Do you get "streaks" of light across your vision? If so, that's probably astigmatism (your eyes aren't round).

It's illegal to wear a tinted visor at night, but I tend to have the lightest tint on a pair of glasses, and I find this helps a quite bit. A friend of mine swears by polarised glasses for night driving.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

no its like a 100w bulb in my eyes im totally blinded until the car has passed, im worried its going to cause an accident, I know my eyes are sensitive to light.
I will talk to my optician and see what they say,

some cars are ok have no problems with them but others are so bright just like full beam

I was always told to look away from the light - eg look slightly to the left when the car is passing. Our eyes are naturally drawn towards the light. Perhaps not as easy on a motorbike though...

I've noticed this also, especially on the new cars, the headlight just seem so bright like its almost full beam.
Did you know that 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not happy?!
  • The headlight war is full on, aided and abetted by ever more LED fairy lights glittering away, factor in massive red eye from more brake lights than you can shake a stick at.

What chance the poor old cyclist (no not the aggressive ones wearing too tight round the nethers tights but the bloke riding his bike home from work) or pedestrian becoming increasingly invisible as the Lumens spiral.

The amusing thing is that for all this 'look at me i've got big lightpower' other drivers are so blinded that they cannot gauge acceleration or deceleration rates nor approaching speeds as easily as a normally lit vehicle, but carry in blinding others because they think they can be seen and are safe.
