No, just the fact that you have attended the course.
  • They're perfectly fine - until you need them :)

All budget insurance companies are the same. They're all the same kind of rubbish that is.

The problem is that they don't actually have anyone with any experience there to handle your claim. During my claim, I had to actually bring the handler's attention to the highway code. His response was "Oh yea... that's a good point..."

Direct Line were the same kind of useless. I had some items stolen out of my car. They refused the claim, stating that as the tonneau cover was pulled over, a thief would have known there were valuables in the car. I did ask if the situation had been that the cover was not pulled over, I wouldn't have been covered, therefore was my insurance actually valid given it was an estate? They spent various letters denying everything. I gave up in the end.

I've gone Diamond again (same company as Admiral). My car isn't new enough to be insured by a decent insurer. However, the two claims I had with Zurich were both fuss free, the handlers were very knowledgeable and kept me informed and I don't think I had an ounce of trouble. However, they won't insure anything over 10 years old. I do however have house insurance with them and it's the same story. I claimed for our bathroom a few years ago and no fuss about any of it. Straight in and done.

You get what you pay for! If you have a premium car, get the insurance to go with it. If you have a cheap car and do little miles and are prepared for them to be utter useless, go cheap!

I haven't got a cheap car but as you said if they are all the same go with the cheapest?

I can't see anymore benefits with going with another insurer who going to be double or triple the price.

This was where I was unsure.

The cheap ones are all the same. If you care about your motor, then want your claim handled right by someone who knows what they're on about. Therefore, spend the money on a decent insurer.

If your car is a 15 year old wreck held together with duck tape, then get the insurance to suit :)

I've had various reasons to contact or claim from my insurers over the years. You get what you pay for! I'll be upgrading my £500 go-kart next year hopefully for a 1 or 2 year old Merc A Class. Darn tooting I'll be going with Zurich simply from past experience with them. But for now, Diamond will surely suffice.

  • Getting the cheapest and not crashing your car... :)
That's my usual course of action.

Yes, if I remember correctly, they consider a tow bar a mod so they won't pay to replace it if it is damaged in an accident, but their extra premium to cover mods doesn't cover tow bars.

They don't count tow bars as modifications; they don't even need notified of them. But I guess the flip side is that they won't replace them either.

Really good general Insurers would be Axa, LV, Frizzell and NFU.

If you can afford to go premium then Chubb or Hiscox.

Really? LV and Frizzell are the same company. I had a nightmare of a claim with LV. The third party whose fault it was, was also insured with LV. This made it very difficult because they clearly only wanted a 50/50 basis settlement. Why? So that we both loose our no-claims and both pay our excess ! Complete cowboys. Also wrote off my car and claimed their engineer had inspected it which he hadn't; just relied on photos. Then without my consent they arranged for a car breaker to collect my car !

Anyway Admiral are good on price and documentation but god help you if you are involved in a no-fault claim and are referred to their claims assistance outfit: Albany (NO) Assistance. worse than a chocolate teapot.
