Double Glazing quote

Options
I have just bought a house and we need 4 windows and the doors replaced. Got quote from Everest but they were high at £8000, and then from Anglian who were a bit better at £5000 but the salesman was horrible. Went nasty after I wouldn't take the price and sign right away and then played games by phoning someone for a better deal and for some reason lying to him about our conversation. He swiftly left after that.

I got a local firm to quote and they have come back with £2700 for the job, which to be exact is:

front door: £700
Back door: £500 both uPVC
4 uPVC casement windows - 2 single pane, 1 double and a large lounge window with 3 sections - rosewood in colour.

BFRC registered 1.3U value
New internal sills.

I honestly have little idea about prices, however the fact they are so much cheaper is both good and bad. I understand Everest are expensive and Anglian are a no go.

Does this price seem reasonable for the product? I have more information if anyone has any idea.

Thanks a lot

  • All seems very reasonable, 1.3 equates to an A Rated product depending on what system they use. Its all in the fitting, no point having a great product if the installation is shoddy!
Small local companies normally take pride in their work, reputation is paramount for them. I speak as one of those!good luck
  • Upvc front doors look naff. For a little more £ you could get a composite one.

The £2700 seems a little steep still IMO. I would target 2.5k inc a composite front door or 2k with a uPvc.
    Mortgage overpayment
    01/05/11 - 31/12/2011
    £5000/£7000
    End of 2012 target
    £8400
  • Thanks for the replies.

How secure are upvc doors? Did some searching and it appears they aren't great. All the companies have mentioned security and nothing bad about them. Is it worth shelling out for a composite for security?

Can i ask what your basing this on you have no sizes or no idea of the contruction of the house .Your idea of prices seem very low for a reputable company .The ops price seems a reasonable one based on 5 windows (average price £3-400 )upvc doors and i would say somewhere between £500 and £1000 more for Rockdoors .

Rubbish post . Not even close . Youve seen £2.7k and thought "iknow" £2.7k for that in rosewood is a honest quote (without the details ) Add composit doors and add another £500 maybe more. A decent uPVC door is generally good in most homes . I composite is generally better system with less problems in the future, I fit both and seem to be fitting more composites as the prices are coming down e.g (a standard uPVC front with a decent panel costs me about £380, A similar looking composite costs me £630)

I have contacted the window fitters and they have said the following:

*The 1.3U-Value is for full window inc frame and glass
*All the windows are made to measure and are not just stock windows
*Composite doors would add around £400 to the quote

    My window dimensions are:
    Casement Window - 583-584-583 by 1265 (£516)
    Casement - 550 x 1015 (£270)
    Casement - 540 x 1015 (£288)
    Casement - 525 - 525 by 1015 (£330)

    All 90% Argon 10% Air.

I had another company out who all the guy did was slate the company i'm interested in. He was more interested slating them than selling his own product. Most of the stuff he told me was untrue when I checked with the glaziers.

Does this all seem reasonable to people in the know?

My main worry is that there price is so much cheaper than all the others, which I understand about Everest and Anglian but the other company was local and are in the double glazing ombudsman scheme which to me says they are a good company. They came in at £5000.

    Thanks

depending on the type of fit . Its either a good price or a great price and the £400 composite door is very cheap too. Check their reputation and visit a job they are doing and have done and speak to the householder if your unsure . Find out their payment details and if its payment on satisfaction and completion , Rosewood windows A rated argon filled inc internal cills is doable at that price but theres no room for errors and not much profit .

  • seems like a good price. i paid 1100 for a composite back door earlier this year
  • So..... I invited 4 companies in to give me quotes for 5 basic windows and a patio door in rosewood UPVC.... Who knew getting a straight, fair quote would be so... interesting....

    Two national ones -
Safestyle UK - which involved a two hour 'pitch' of !!!!!!!! and a quote that rapidly descended from £8000 to £2800...!?! Regardless because of their appalling online presence, their concerning pushy salesman, dubious pricing, unsubstantiated claims about awards they have won and ify FENSA registration under a parent company not of that name we shall ditch them. Also had a follow up call which resulted in them being rude and hanging up when I raised these queries....

Everest - Fit the best eh? Well after curtly informing the chap I didn't want any demonstration and had read everything I needed to know regarding their product online the guy measured up and quoted £7000. I emailed head office querying this as their website flouts a 50% off offer that expires with a neat little countdown thingy in 6 days.... I asked if they were telling me that if I got another quote in 6 days time it would be £14,000??? That enquiry didn't go down well either.... and apparently I hadn't had 50% discount... I had had 40%... the full discount is reserved for a mystery band of suckers it seems none of whom I can find evidence of online. Shall perhaps raise an objection or two to the advertising standards folk.....

Local company...... guy walked in.... measured up.... £3150.

Got another company coming tomorrow.... I am a consumer nemesis on this..... Why wouldn't I be when it concerns large amounts of money and work on my home!?

Government and British standards now determine that products all have to be A Grade for energy efficiency if provided by a FENSA regulated company. All have the 'argon' gas sealed 'technology' in the main... all are steel rust proof framed, and all have 'enhanced security'. Curiously I also EXPECT removal and disposal of my old windows 'for free' as part of the price and of course I expect some form of guarantee.... Perhaps I'm picky....
