I have worked out how to assign individual ringtones to specific contacts, but is there a way to assign individual sms tones to specific contacts? I was able to on Blackberry which in some ways is dumber, but can it be done on android?

Might depends on your version of android but on 4.2.2 its possible by going to the contacts and editing it.
