Cheap monthly contract that allows tethering?

Options
Hi,

I have been on the one plan with 3 for 24 months which allows me to use the personal hotspot on my iPhone which I find quite handy - although I don't use it that frequently. Now my contract is coming to an end, and as my iPhone 4S is still work I want to keep using it and get a cheaper contract.

I'm looking for a monthly rolling contract - I don't want to commit to a 12+ contract as my phone might not last that long

I don't need that much minutes - 200 would be enough, and about 200 texts, 500mb data should be ok.

3 have offered a sim only version of the one plan for £25 a month - which s too much for me to justify when I don't se tethering that much, or £18 a month on a 12 month contract which is no good.

Does anyone know what other networks offer sim only contracts with tethering? It's not very clear what's included when I use comparison sites

Thanks in advance!

Try GiffGaff. £10 a month for 500 mins and 1GB data. No contract.

  • Thanks, I'll have a look at that thread now. I originally did want to switch to gifgaf, then I heard they don't allow personal hotspot which put me off. How would I tether without personal hotspot?

Sorry if I'm being dim - I'm not much of a techie!

    Hi,
3 have offered a sim only version of the one plan for £25 a month - which s too much for me to justify when I don't se tethering that much, or £18 a month on a 12 month contract which is no good.

On their website, the One Plan on SIM only, 1 month rolling contract is £18 a month, not £25. The 12 month contract is actually £15, so what they have offered seems a bit odd as it's more expensive than what they're advertising!

The other plans don't include tethering, however you can get tethering as an add-on (I *think* it's £5 a month). So, you could go for one of the cheaper plans e.g. Essential Internet SIM 200 1 Month - £9.90/month for 200 minutes, 500MB, 5000 texts then buy the add-on. Would only save £3/month doing that over getting the One Plan though, and for much less minutes/data etc.

Btw, I don't work for Three - I've just done a lot of research into their deals over the past few days, looking to switch over from VF.

As stated above. Three do the 1 month version of the One Plan for £18pm. Just ask to switch to that.

3 have quoted you the wrong prices.

See The One Plan 1 month SIM.£18 a month.

Providing you have inbuilt tethering on your phone the £10 Giff Gaff Goody Bag will be ok up to 1mb.

"Tethering is permitted on £10 goodybag and will work on all smartphones with an inbuilt tethering feature, except for the iPhone and BlackBerry."

Don't bother, while giffgaff officially allow tethering on the £7.50 and £10 goody bags (not on £12 or above), it isn't actually possible to tether an iphone as they don't have an official carrier profile (and O2 don't seem to want to allow it).

Trying to open hotspot just redirects to O2 and you get a message saying you need an O2 contract to tether.

  • Thanks everyone for the replies! I believe 3 delibaretly quoted me the higher price as I spoke to them twice, the first time I switched to their £9.90 a month sim only plan and I only realised at the end that it didnt include tethering, they offered me the one plan for £18 for 12 months or £25 a month, I didn't want either of those plans and just went with the £9.90 a month option.

After I got off the phone to 3 I remembered my only reason for staying with 3 is because I wanted tethering and if I wasn't going to get that at a decent price I might as well switch to gif gaf, so I rang again and said I didn't want to go ahead with it - and again they offered me the £18/25 a month options and when I explained that a 12 month contract wasnt an option and £25 a month too high they offered me a add on I think it was a 100mb data but I'm not sure, for around £14.99. I thought that was too expensive fr such a low amount of data and said I'd cancel completely and switch to gif gaf, they said it will cost me £37ish to cancel because I have to give 30 days notice, so I decided to stick with the 9.90 contract and look to switching in a month or 2 when I won't pay so much for the 30 days notice.

I also notice that they have a cheaper 1 month contract that £9.90, which they told me was their cheapest.

I hate 3 and their terrible customer service, they just wear me down because I get fed up speaking to them so try and go for. They can expect an angry call from me tomorrow!

Also D123, thanks for clearing that up about gif gaf - that makes sense as I couldn't find out anywhere how to tether without personal hotspot or jail breaking

wow. So they're not even offering you the standard deals that they should be offering. And why would you have to pay £40 to cancel a one month contract...

I'd try again one more time to move to the £18pm one plan 1m deal. If they can't even do that then just leave.
