It's maybe a weekend premium because they've only got enough planes of their own to meet demand Mon-Fri and have to hire extra ones due to increased demand at weekends. It'd be cheaper for them to hire extra planes at the weekend than keep spare ones sitting idle on the ground during the week. And the cost of the extra weekend planes is passed onto every "weekender" as a supplement.

Or maybe it's because the price of aviation fuel rises as demand peaks on a friday night then reduces on a monday morning when things are less busy.

I'm just guessing really. I know nothing about aviation economics and frankly I think it shows ;)

I dunno syledis. We need an aviation expert for this one.

If you think this is bad...

A couple of years ago, Swiss (the national airline of Switzerland) introduced a ten pound fee for selling you a ticket. Yes, that's right, a ten pound ticket charge, the same whether you book on-line, by telephone, or in person. Except that on top of that there were additional service charges for booking by telephone, and there was nowhere to pay in person. And this was for an e-ticket (really just putting your name into their computer system) so if you wanted an actual paper ticket there was another charge. Not to mention the fee for paying by credit card.

It would have ended up quite pricey, even for a free flight!

The daft thing for me is that i am flying home from the states on the 4th and flying back out there again on the 7th. I know i could stay there and meet them but i want us to travel as a family. i normally fly Continental, or, if i have no choice KLM via Schipol but Virgin is an unknown quantity for me. Part of it was that the kids wanted to fly on a jumbo jet( or in their words, a jumbo and a jet!) and they are doing it this year from Glasgow. Im not expecting the world, just what i paid for. Does anyone know if there will be a fast checkin for Skyteam Elite Members?

    thanks again

Yes. Skyteam Elite do have a fast check in facility. If you have an Amex Black you can get priority access too. If you can, get a Natwest Black, which can offer that too.

Regarding surcharges for weekend flights, I think this is unacceptable especially if that is the only time-tabled flights from Scotland. In Scotland we don't really have a big choice of destinations, flying on a daily basis, compared with the likes of say Manchester, Gatwick, Heathrow etc. We are often quite heavily penalised with supplement charges from package holiday companies too, flying out from Glasgow or Edinburgh. Both my DH and I have travelled to some far flung places and it nearly always involves more expense (and time) flying out of Scotland. We always have to allow plenty time at whatever hub airport we fly too before the long haul as there can be problems at this end. We have found quite often that KLM offer good prices from Edinburgh using Schipol as a good international hub.

I know this doesn't help OP but just an observation.

But surely you can only use this for a Skyteam airline flight? I didn't think Virgin were part of the group?
