I guess there are two ways to look at it. Firstly you had money that Student Finance are saying that you are not entitled to due to your dad submitting false income details and they want to reclaim it, which is understandable, but, equally it wasn't your fault, it was your dads. I don't know what your relationship is like with him now but I feel that ultimately it is him who is liable (even though you received the money) I guess your option would be to ask him to repay this money(fat chance??) or to contact the Student Loans Co (who chase the repayment-not Student Finance) and offer to repay in instalments and then go after your dad for the money (through court if necessary (depending on your relationship with him))

The other thing to look at is household income at the time and when the house was sold. If your parents were leading separate lives, was something drawn up officially to state this? If there was and you have proof I don't know whether you could still ask for a reassessment due change of income at the time or whether it is too late now.
If Taiko is about(?) I am sure he will know whether this is possible or not.

It seems wrong that you are being penalised for something your dad did.

There is no obligation on a parent to pay towards their child's time at uni, even though the child's grant/ loan will have been directly effected by the parent's income.

How Old were you signed the contract.

The system requires the parent to enter their financial details confidentially, so there is no way of knowing if a parent was being truthful or falsely declaring their income. In any case a lot of students are not aware of their parents' income.

No we were all residing in the same house until it sold but leading separate lives.

I think you need to take this further. Although living in the same house, you were actually living with your mother and independent of your father, so his income should not be taken into account. The problem is that this is hard to prove and possibly other parents have tried to claim this in order to boost their offspring's finances.

I know there is no obligation on a parent to support their children at Uni BUT the fact remains that if a parent lied about their income and a student was 'over paid', it wasn't the student's fault that this occurred but the parent's. Therefore in a perfect world the parent is the one who should be liable and hence why I suggested taking court action if need be.

But it's the student who has benefited from the parents' lies and has had the use of this money during their time at university.

Agreed, but not knowingly, and because of a parent's dishonesty they have to withdraw with only 6 months to go.

My father has lied on my application forms last year, giving false accounts, being self employed and now student finance want me to repay. I can't as I have no money or earnings.I have tried to get help from uni but nothing. I have explained to student finance but they don't help or care. I have now left uni with only 6 months until I graduate as I cannot afford to stay on my course.
Now getting threatening letters. I'm afraid and don't know where to turn to for help.
    Any advise please.

are the university asking you to leave? - if not I would do anything to try to finish so close to the finish line... Exactly how much do you need?

have SFE given you no money at all this year?

have you spoken to the university - when I thought that sfe were withdrawing my fees last year (they had been paid by January, and then withdrawn in April) the lady in finance was a great help, really understanding and kind -

have you asked your Dad for help - do you have a part time job at all? could you move back with one of the 'rents, and commute to uni to finish the last few months - what days do you have lectures - could you crash a night on a mates couch to do two days in a row - I realise not perfect, but would it be possible - could you do a £20 Ramada type room for a few nights to give the mates sofas a breather???

is there any chance of loans or grants from another source - look at turn 2 us as they may have something you can apply for...

have SFE given you the right to appeal, or not - will they allow you to defer the repayments (or can you enter a repayment plan for the next six months giving them what you can afford - which if you are trying to finish your degree, and working part time may only equate to a little for a short while)?

you are so close to the finishing line, i hope it all comes together for you. xx
