Urgent help needed

Options
My father has lied on my application forms last year, giving false accounts, being self employed and now student finance want me to repay. I can't as I have no money or earnings.I have tried to get help from uni but nothing. I have explained to student finance but they don't help or care. I have now left uni with only 6 months until I graduate as I cannot afford to stay on my course.
Now getting threatening letters. I'm afraid and don't know where to turn to for help.
Any advise please.

Did you check what he'd put on the application?

Realistically, would the OP know if the father's figures were true or not?

OP, is there a welfare officer or student support service at the uni that can help you find a way forward?

Do you have your own insurance for your belongings? If so, do you have legal advice as part of that?

How has the uni found out that your dad lied?

No I didn't check what he put as my parents were in the middle of a messy divorce, house selling etc etc. I have tried everything at the uni support. I don't know how they know. Unless it's because my brother has now gone to uni this year. His is unaffected lol!

You say that your parents were in the middle of a messy divorce, were they separated when you applied for Student Finance? Whether they were or weren't, which parent were you living with?
As in, was it your dad and he simply gave misleading information, or did you live with mum who maybe had a lower income (if this was the case did you complete a change of circumstances form and ask for a reassessment of finance due to lower income?)

No we were all residing in the same house until it sold but leading separate lives.

I guess there are two ways to look at it. Firstly you had money that Student Finance are saying that you are not entitled to due to your dad submitting false income details and they want to reclaim it, which is understandable, but, equally it wasn't your fault, it was your dads. I don't know what your relationship is like with him now but I feel that ultimately it is him who is liable (even though you received the money) I guess your option would be to ask him to repay this money(fat chance??) or to contact the Student Loans Co (who chase the repayment-not Student Finance) and offer to repay in instalments and then go after your dad for the money (through court if necessary (depending on your relationship with him))

The other thing to look at is household income at the time and when the house was sold. If your parents were leading separate lives, was something drawn up officially to state this? If there was and you have proof I don't know whether you could still ask for a reassessment due change of income at the time or whether it is too late now.
If Taiko is about(?) I am sure he will know whether this is possible or not.

It seems wrong that you are being penalised for something your dad did.

How Old were you signed the contract.
    Be happy...;)
  • I think you should have to talk with the senior most person in that department. Tell them your situation either you have to take a money help from friends or any other person.

Don't know if it would be worth seeing if your mum's solicitor can help? Presumably they would have figures for the final split?

Can you see your tutor and both of you go to student finance to try and understand why they think your father has lied, so at the very least you fully understand. Then, maybe go and see your MP. They go by addresses so you may find the one in the uni town can't help but the one in your home town can, or vice versa.
