Firewood collecting permit in this local area?

Is there such a thing? I have emailed The Forestry Commission so far no answer.
How do you find free logs in this local area?
Are there any voluntary groups in this local area where there is a by product of
firewood such as path clearing etc.
Are there any local land owners that need some trees chopping down for free?
These are just some of my hairbrained ideas there must be more. I really want
firewood for free for my hungry wood burner.

This was covered a few weeks ago. As far as I am aware, the Forestry Commission stopped issuing permits two or three years ago.

When you had the stove fitted, didn't it occur to you that you would have to feed it?

Actually, it looks like the FC do issue permits. They aren't free though... and there are none available at the moment.

I was under the impression that the FC had ceased issuing permits on health and safety grounds after an incident where a branch fell on someone as they were collecting wood.

I have access to free firewood. In real terms it isn't free though. I have to spend time cutting it, splitting it and transporting it. I also have a considerable sum invested in the associated paraphernalia... chainsaws, splitting mauls, safety equipment etc.

So, no, despite the popular myth, there is no easy answer to free fuel..

I looked onto permits a few weeks ago. I think they are available in a couple of areas but cost about £250 (or there abouts) so you would have collect a good amount of wood to make it pay. You'd be better off buying £250 worth of seasoned split wood.

  • I checked with our council regarding fallen trees in the local parks. They said it was absolutely fine to help ourselves. We are also lucky that we live near the beach so able to get wood from there too.

I thought about near dual carriage ways, canals, railway lines and council land. But again I don't know the restrictions. I would rather have a permit then I know I can't get into trouble.
