No Hot water or heating

Our boiler packed up yesterday - it is a Baxi 105e. It kept trying to ignite and failing - eventually it did fire up and the heating started to work. Then as soon as I turned on the hot water all the lights went out, except the power on one. No fault lights flashed.
This happened a couple of times until we gave up. Husband got the bloke who installed the new boiler and GCH in our rental property in to have a look at it. He bought a pressure valve to see if that was the problem -he says it wasn't and then said it could be a problem with the board (I forget what he called it). This board will cost £145 and he doesn't know if that will fix it - he then says I only install boilers I don't fix them!
What should I do? I wish OH had called the bloke who fixed it last winter but he didn't. Is it normal to install them and know nothing about them. Also, if he's installing boilers does he have to be Gas Safe registered?

just because he's legally (that's if he is) able to put one on a wall doesn't mean he knows diddly squat about fixing themI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

Many GSR RGI's only install and don't want to be bothered with repairs. This one clearly has no fault-finding skills whatsoever, so get someone in who has a clue.
Find someone local and reliable, as with that model you'll probably be needing them again before long.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
It is shocking the number of RGIs who lack fault finding skills. Should be able to repair what you install...bizarre.:eek:0

I suspect these installers quite often lack the skills and experience to diagnose and repair. We do repairs and most people will wait until a weekday morning to call as they don't want to be pay for unsocial hours.0 -

Are you speaking as someone who runs a heating business?
With combis now making up the majority of installs these days and more people using gas to heat their hot water year rather then the immersion heaters in vented cylinders the repair end of the business spreads throughout the year. Also, many people will make do without their central heating but hot water for personal hygiene is another matter.;)0 -
The people who just do installs are usually those that just want a quick buck and no hassle

First step. You need to contact a Heating engineer! a plumber/gas fitter are not the same! A heating engineer will be equipped with all the test equipment and knowledge to diagnose and rectify boiler faults without any guess work! I have seen this many times and has cost the consumer a fortune in guess work and parts been replaced that are not needed!
Contact a Heating engineer and describe the fault. He will normally tell you the possible causes and quote accordingly! Trying to save money will eventually cost more!0
