And no I didn't ration wine (are you mad??) or coffee. Neither were rationed in the war, but they were obviously pretty scarce. I didn't ration fruit juice either although have since realised we can manage without and now don't buy it at all.
Here you go.

I really like the idea of this thread. But above all, it makes me wish my mum was still alive. Now I'm a woman of mature years myself and trying to follow in her footsteps myself I just wish she were here so I could tell her how I now understand how difficult it must have been trying to bring up two small children in those conditions, especially when the bombs were raining down overhead.
I do remember her trying to make a substitute for marzipan for a birthday cake which was made with mashed haricot beans and some kind of banana or vanilla essence. It dried out as hard as a rock!0 -

You can sour milk by adding a very small amount of lemon juice to it. I use it to bake with and find whole milk works best. Just take 1 cup of milk and add 1/2 a teaspoon of lemon juice stir well then leave for about 10 minutes and there you go."To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill" Sun Tzu0

I've found buttermilk in many big supermarkets, if that's what you mean. My nan in Germany left milk out until it thickened, then chilled it and ate it with dutch crispbakes/ German 'Zwieback' crumbled in and a bit of sugar sprinkled over. It was really refreshing in summer, but the last time I tried it the milk was inedible. Something to do with how it's treated?0 -
I think it must be buttermilk agiaga is talking about, lot's of people like to drink it. It is quite different from sourmilk which is great for baking with but disgusting to drink.. Buttermilk is the watery fluid left after you have churned butter to make cream, which I did when the supermarket had ton's of double cream selling oober cheap after New Year. Buttermilk makes the best scones ever."To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill" Sun Tzu0
