Thriftlady's wartime experiment

That's okay, I can type them up in my own words with variations that I use, as I do tend to add some dry herbs, spices, etc. from what I have on my spice rack, amongst other things!
Thriftlady - I do find the recipes quite nice, but also like to add herbs and things myselfMy main concern though, was to find recipes that would be nutritious and because I didn't want to feed my son crap. I was brought up by my Grandparents and Great-Grandparents though; so I'm quite used to eating a lot of food that use old-fashioned recipes! Nom nom nom LOL :P
I shall type out my variations of the recipes then rather than the actual word-for-word ones from the book, if that would be okay. I'll also ask my Grandmother if I can copy out her recipes she's written in a little notebook - because they're really yummy and super-cheap to make! Might take me a little while; but watch this space!Wins 2013: Stella Cidre Chalice, Pack of Berol fabric pens, Comfort Umbrella, £50 cash, Warburtons brad and picnic hamper :j0 -
Hi Everyone,
Well as the title states I'm all excited as on Monday my OH and I are going to embark on "wartime rationing". He is completely behind me in this (God love him, he goes along with all my harebrained experiments!). I am reading through this thread for more information and I have two very informative books "The Victory Cookbook" and "The Wartime Kitchen and Garden-The Home Front 1939-1945 ". We have a large allotment and produce most of our own veg and some soft fruit and we keep two hens in the back garden. My only problem is I want to be as accurate as I can but find it difficult to get amounts of things correct. For instance we use UHT milk which I will continue to use and have this instead of the dried household milk but can't find out how many pints the tins of dried milk made. Also I "have to give up my shell egg allowance in exchange for poultry feed" but although one book states one person's egg allowance equalled 4lbs of feed it doesn't say how long for, i.e. was that 4lbs a month or a week? Can anyone help with these little niggles please? Thanks so much and wish me luck everyone! P. :j0 -
Has a new thread with the recipes from Kittie been started? Looking forward to that.
PJ1 - we're also having a little try at this (started Saturday) although I will have a couple of little cheats in the same line as Thriftlady. (don't want a mutany on my hands. )
DS2 is already expressing concerns over the fact that the butter doesn't look like its going to hold out till the next 'rations' are due. Its only day 3!
Up side is that my parents are enjoying reliving memories and I'm finding out some interesting stuff from them.MAY GROCERY CHALLENGE £0/ £250

Hi everyone,
Started off well with porridge oats and raisins soaked in milk for breakfast...not a hardship as this is what we usually have anyway. For lunch we have marmite and salad sandwiches and an apple. For dinner I will be making liver and bacon cake with new potatoes and salad. Haven't decided on dessert yet but we might give those a miss anyway, for the sake of the purse and hips and to save our sugar ration for jam making!
I won't be posting every day as I won't have the time but will be as frequent as I can be. P.0 -
I'm going to give this a go and just wanted to check if my maths are right when it comes to the rations. This household consists of me and my DD who's 8 and has school dinners.
Weekly amount for the household.- Milk - 6pts (3600ml - since I buy UHT skimmed milk I'm going to round this up to 4litres)
- Butter - 100g / Margarine - 200g (subbing 300g of "spread" like Flora or something)
- Cooking Fat - 200g (subbing spray oil or olive oil both of which I have in)
- Cheese - 100-450g
- Bacon & Ham - 200g
- Meat - 12p worth (excluding sausage)
- Eggs - 8 fresh (subbing fresh for the equivalent of dried)
- Sugar - 450g (will mainly be going into baking I think!)
- Tea - 100g (subbing half for hot chocolate here, too much tea makes me ill)
- Jam - 112g (or 1 jar per month between us)
- Sweets - 175g
DD is studying WW2 in school ATM and seems quiet excited at the ideaConsidering I'm doing voluntary work 5 days a week so will have to make packed lunches out of these, I'm not quite as keen :rotfl::rotfl:

Meat - 12p worth (excluding sausage)
The ration was 1s 2d a week for everyone over 5. But 1s 2d is not worth 6p now. It is difficult to calculate 'worth' but based on the retail price index 1s 2d is worth about £2.37. Therefore you will have £4.74 to spend on rationed meat.
Don't forget that rabbit and other game was off ration as was offal and sausages.
Good luck!0 -

A quick question if I may? My family consists of 2 adults, plus a 16 and a 13 year old boy. Would I just double up the above allowances or did children of different ages have different rations? Also not sure at what age kids became considered as an adult
many thanks0 -

Thank you!!!!!!!!! I thought that 12p worth of meat was nothing as well.:rotfl: I was going on the amount quoted somewhere (can't remember where now) and it said it was about 6p per person per week, forgot about the RPI...I thought the potatoes and lentils I have would disappear pretty fast bulking out that pitiful amount
:rotfl::rotfl:
Guess I'll be making a erm, comprehensive list of things I have in tonight:eek:
