I've found buttermilk in many big supermarkets, if that's what you mean. My nan in Germany left milk out until it thickened, then chilled it and ate it with dutch crispbakes/ German 'Zwieback' crumbled in and a bit of sugar sprinkled over. It was really refreshing in summer, but the last time I tried it the milk was inedible. Something to do with how it's treated?

It's difficult to explain to British people but buttermilk and sour milk that's 2 different things. Buttermilk is in almost every bigger supermarket but not sour milk.
My Gran used to do the same - left milk out until it thickened, I used to do it with her and wanted to do it again but it's not working. I think it's something to do with killing bacteria in milk before selling it. I was really hoping that somebody found the way of producing it at home

Agiaga, I am Polish too and I am afraid you cannot get kwasne mleko(sour milk) in Britain unless you have access to a farm where you can get unpasteurised milk "straight from a cow". The pasteurised milk you get from shops "goes off" and does not sour. hth

  • Well, the milk I used for pancakes was 'gone off milk'. Just like a wartime housewife I put it to good use rather than throwing it out. My milk was unhomogenised from a farm shop and as such sours much more readily than supermarkey homogenised milk.

I wish I could remember exactly where I saw it, but somewhen over the past day or two was a news report about an organic farmer supplying milk straight from the cow. Might have been on meridian [ITV] or south today[BBC] if you would like to look for it...

  • Phew! I've just spent chunks of the last two days reading through this thread, and fascinating it was too - both the food information and the reminiscences.

I don't think it's something I would try myself, but I'm very impressed by those of you who have! :-)

  • Fantastic thread and a great resource! My partner and I are going back on rations for a while (we did a month last year) and have set up a new photographic blog to track our progress. As we are both full time students the ration diet saves us alot of money which we can put towards our wedding later in the year...(and hopefully I'll fit a little better into my wedding suit..)

As I update the site I'll try to put up any interesting or little known recipes I find (for instance just bought an original wartime 'Stork' recipe book).

unfortunately moneysavingexpert won't let me post the link in case I am a spammer (no pun intended with my name!).... so i will have to break it up, it is......

  • A very promising start Spamfritter, well done.

Please keep it up, i've seen that many blogs that get me going and then they just fizzle out.... says she who only reads and therefore probably doesn't realise how much they take to maintain.

I'm definitely going to start incorporating a few wartime recipes and I may start with the bacon turnover.

There's a lady (ex-pat) in Nova Scotia doing a similar blog, I'm sure you're aware but in case not it's 1940sexperiment wordpress com.

    Thanks for sharing.

Don't get too excited :D it was only 1 or 2 lbs. I think though if you stuck to the rations then weight would come off. In fact there's a lady in Canada who is doing just that here - The 1940s Experiment, she's really doing it properly.
