Thriftlady's wartime experiment

I've just been reading the double page spread in the centre of today's Daily Mail about living on rationing. I like the friendly detail on these pages, though, and all the stories.
I've had a really good time reading through this thread. Daily life in the period of rationing has always held a fascination for me and I'm delighted to find that others agree.
Thank you to thriftlady and all the others who have contributed. I'm looking forward to seeing that book on sale too!

A previous poster stated that packaged suet was not available in the War and that it was all cut off a block. This is not true though I would not doubt that you could buy suet without any advertising around it. I am going to try to place a link to a photo of an ORLOX BEEF SUET packet that clearly has WARTIME ISSUE ONLY printed on it. Here goes

Thank you - got the pictures just fine!
I have been reading through the Victory Cookbook, even found a recipe for snoek! But you should be on the whalemeat stage of things by now, shouldn't you???? That seems to have come in after the war when things were still very tight.0 -
