Comping related injury???

Over the past week I've had a lump appear to the side of my right wrist just below my thumb (my mouse hand). It's not solid but I'm sure it's what is causing the back of my hand to ache (especially when I lift heavy saucepans etc) and I have general overall ache in my right arm too.

Now I know the sensible answer is "GO TO THE DOCTORS!" but....I really am a big girls blouse when it comes to doctors/dentists/hairdressers (I really am a catch - lol) so I wondered if any other hardcore compers had experienced anything similar?

I had carpal tunnel syndrome about 20 yrs ago (and it feels nothing like that) and I also dislocated both thumbs (at the same time) about 19 years ago and it really doesn't feel like that! I can only imagine it's because I'm using the mouse lots more now?

Any advice/opinions will be gratefully received.

Thanks
Rae xx

It's a synovial cyst (also known as a bible cyst due to the "old wife's" way to remove it - by hitting hard with a bible!!). Wouldn't recommend that though as will normally come back and could make it worse. You can get it drained (local anaesthetic normally) or completely removed which means it shouldn't come back.

Sorry, will mean seeing your GP I'm afraid if you want it gone.

It's dangerous work this comping. I think I've got arthritis in my 'clicking' finger :(

  • Thanks Alidolly, knowing it is something common makes me more inclined to go to the docs. I could have tapped in symptoms to Google but in past I've noticed all the "horrors" come up first so I don't! Thank you again.

Barnabysue do you think comping should be listed as an extreme sport? ;) Sorry you've a sore 'clicking finger' :( that's not fun at all.

Our PCT doesn't drain or remove ganglions anymore, the GP told me to bash it with a heavy book x

I've had to learn to be more ambidextrous when using the mouse, I occasionally switch from the right to the left hand. It feels weird to begin with, but after time you get used to it, the left/right buttons can be switched in the Windows mouse setting too.

I had a ganglion & it went of its own accord - it shouldn't be painful though - although mine was pressing on my tendon so it caused the tendon to hurt

Thank you Mclarkie! I had no idea you could switch the Windows mouse settings...I shall go and have a look. I did have a half hearted attempt at using the mouse in my left hand but I have no patience and ended up having a prize hissy fit

Thanks all for your advice/opinions. xx

Bash it with a book! My friend had the same and did it... bodies are weird! :D

Edit to add: or go to a doctor... probably the more sensible route :rotfl:

Thanks Hamsterfan, yes I'm guessing that whatever it is, is pressing on the tube that houses the nerves.

I do use RoboForm so I don't think I'm typing excessively so I'm guessing it's the moving of the mouse that is aggravating it. Maybe I should move my whole arm rather than just my hand.
