Sim-only while figuring out a POA?

I'm currently at the end of a contract and I'm thinking about what to do next (currently - 24 month vodafone contract for an iphone 4, 500mb, unltd texts and 500 mins for £37)
There's nothing wrong with my phone yet (touch wood) and I'm not desperate to get a new one. Right now I have finals to focus on and I'm going to be starting a new job next august (touch wood again!) so my financial situation will change then.
While I decide what I want to do and whether I want to upgrade etc, I was wondering if it'd make sense to switch to a sim-only plan? Probably a rolling one (this weeks newsletter had one from Virgin) so that once I do decide what I want to do I don't have to wait another 6months etc?
I talked it over with my dad (classic student) and he just wondered if there are any draw backs to sim-only and is reluctant to do much before we can sort it properly at christmas. Has anyone got any experience/things to persuade him its ok!?
Thanks for any help!

That said, there are good PAYG deals around as well. Do you really need unlimited texts and 500 minutes?0 -
You can get 500 mins, unlimited texts, 1Gb with no rolling contract on giffgaff for £10 a month.0

And what is the alternative? To keep paying £37?
It's an iphone contract, if I got a new phone chances are I'd keep with an iphone contract (5c), and going by lowest overall cost over the 24month period, the cheapest one would be £47.
I know iphones are one of the most expensive options and that's a personal choice. This is more about making use of the current phone I have while not rushing into a contract for the next 2 years when my financial situation is changing soon. Why do you want to persuade him?
Persuade- perhaps reassure is a better option - I don't think he knew much about sim-only and so it seemed an easier option to stick to the contract. It's a long story financially but my parents give me money towards part of my contract so I do want him to be happy with it.
I certainly don't need the minutes, but I do use a lot of texts (I'll have a look back at last months tally) and always cutting it close with my data. You can get 500 mins, unlimited texts, 1Gb with no rolling contract on giffgaff for £10 a month.
thanks I'll go have a look now!0 -

5c costs £469.
£469/24=£19.50 p.m.
Add the above Giffgaff £10 p.m., and it will be £29.50, not £47.
Let's make it £15 at giffgaff for unlimited texts and data. Paying £47 p.m. instead means borrowing £469 for 24 months at 67.5% APR.
If you (or your dad) don't have £469 saved, then you have to change your "personal choice" instead of borrowing money at this cost.0 -
Cancelling my current contract and have already ordered my giffgaff sim to stick in my current phone. If I do get a new handset (& there's been no problems so far!) ill be sticking with giffgaff

I know nowt about gifgaf, but I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that your iPhone will be locked to Voda - will a gifgaf sim work in it???0 -
.....and Giff Gaff are prone to numerous service outages and have the worst 3G coverage (O2) of any network.
Surely the best thing is to ask Vodafone if they'll offer a deal on sim only rather than leave?I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -
if locked to Vodafone? Get vodafone Sim only

If locked, it's well worth unlocking while the contract isn't over yet.0
