Leaving BT help please

I finally got my Mum to agree to moving to a new home phone provider. She doesn't have broadband, just a landline with BT.

We rang Post Office Home Phone on 3 November, applied over the phone and said they will take over the existing number and there was no need for us to do anything with regards to BT. The date of going live would be 18 November.

Today my Mum has had a letter saying sorry that she's leaving BT and she will be charged a termination fee, but we have to ring up to find out how much. She's not recently taken out any new contracts with BT, she was just on the free anytime calls.

Feel a bit annoyed now, as I assumed that the Post Office were dealing with the changeover and as far as I was concerned, we didn't need to do anything except pay the final bill to BT once we switched over.

Any advice please?

How long has she been with them?

If more than a year, then maybe she agreed to a new contract in return for free calls anytime (she would normally have to pay for those, so there must be a reason why she now has them free)
  • Checked account and she is on the Unlimited Anytime Calls package, which she has been on for a good few years

But why does she get it free?
  • Sorry if my posting wasn't clear, she pays BT around £30 per quarter including line rental for this - I meant that she gets free calls included in this package.

I believe the termination fee will be the final cost of all calls etc. I would call BT and ask them.

By the sounds of it you are on a rolling month to month contract whihc means there should be no termination fees.

BT quite often get often get their terminology mixed so I wouldn't worry too much, but you do need to call them

I thought you have to give 30 days notice, even if you were outside a minimum term, if you called the PO on the 3rd and they give a changeover date of the 18th then even if they advised BT straight away, that's only 15 days notice, probably less, so the ETC may be in lieu of notice,
As others have said Anytime calls normally costs about £6/month on top of line rental, so if she is paying £30 a quarter, that's £10/month, it seems like a good deal...what were the PO offering, or is it a case of poor service you want to leave BT rather than price ?

Does she get a cheap line rental for some reason?

    This looks an unbeatable deal!

Could I ask the BT Rep why the details of the contract - contract type - date contract terminates - penalties for early exit etc. are not provided online as part of my personal account details?
