Virgin Smart Call App giving access to my Virgin landline talk plan

Options
I can't see this posted anywhere so thought I would post.

I've just downloaded the Virgin SmartCall App onto my old steam driven iPhone 3GS. This will allow me to call all those numbers included in my Virgin home phone talk plan from my mobile at no extra cost. I will need to be connected to wifi. I have free weekend calls on my talk plan. I have just tried to make a test call and a warning pops up warning me that this call will be charged.

I will also be able to use this for calling home from overseas.

BT have also launched a similar App. My Dad has free evening and weekend calls with BT so I might download this for access to free evening calls when overseas, with Dad's permission of course.

if you are connected on Wifi then it should work - as that's exactly what I do with my the BT SmartTalk app..

Would you normally be charged for a call at this time? I have the evening and weekends package and it works fine on that, although I am usually at home in that time, and my mobile minutes plenty cover when im out - so difficult to pick a way that it would work for my - besides being out of the country.. but that can be done through Skype of facetime with no risk of charging...
  • Thanks StuC75. I was pointing out that it does work. I will only get free calls this way at the weekend.

I got quite excited about the prospect of getting free calls when overseas. And with the warning that popped up warning me I would be charged when I tried it this morning it looks as though there'd be no risk of making a chargeable call in error.

Apologies for not explaining myself properly.

It's a great app. And it's something we'll see from a few mobile phone networks in the near future. O2 already have TU GO and we should see similar solutions from other networks.

has o2 tu go improved since its abysmal launch? never liked how if duplicated all the text messages from the phone into its own internal browser.

It's still a bit hit and miss tbh.

Three's Voice over Wi-Fi solution will be much better and more integrated into the mobile OS.

EE have a solution in the works but the public were supposed to hear something by now. Even the EE trials team haven't got their hands on it so either it's been delayed massively or just scrapped overall.
