I only ever run Windows 8 in Desktop mode. If install one of the many start menu replacements (I like http://www.classicshell.net/), totally bypass the Metro/Modern UI and then Windows 8 is a perfectly fine operating system with a few improvements over Windows 7.

I installed the 8.1 update but didn't notice any changes at all in the Desktop mode.
