I just mentioned this to Barcode and she told me to be careful that it doesn't affect the broadband connection.
Would they give us a 'lower' line just for being in the scheme, instead of a normal one? I can't really believe that, there must be only one standard.
    No?

You are not allowed to have a broadband/ADSL connection on a Light User Scheme line.

    Why?
In the end, the scheme relates to calls, and I really don't call people much (people call me, hehehe). It's not fair to be affected in an unrelated issue...

    VOIP?.................
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Why.. hmm - because its in the terms and conditions ? - and BT will block your line from having broadband..

Seriously though - the Light User Scheme is designed for 'low users' of the telecommunications network (i.e. the local loop [the bit between your house and the exchange] - not just low users of voice calls - which is what your line rental is used for) and if you are using ADSL/broadband you are using that part of the network and it will cost just as much to maintain 'your' local loop as it does for people who do use it for voice calls.

    Regards
    Sunil

    Oh, I'm confused now :(

A phone line is a phone line, isn't it?
I know I didn't have to specify that I wanted a phone line capable of supporting broadband either in portugal or in switzerland, and when I was looking through the BT site earlier it also never mentioned it. Just 'new users' takes you to choose the BT Together 1 plus the installation fee, and that it. No questions on whether I'm going to use the phone line for broadband :/

Ok, I think I get it...

Still, I don't remember reading that in the terms and conditions...
Is it when they say "- ADSL, ISDN or business lines are excluded"? As I said before, I don't nedd a special line...
    *still confused*

  • Why are you encouraging people to lie (if its not true)?

Please remember that BT are not subsidising the Light User Scheme but that other BT customers are.. - i.e. our bills are slightly higher than they would be otherwise.

this is like saying shoplifters are causing price increases on food, paying tax towards helping those with children when others do not...the list can go on forever.
when all said and done having a mobile phone has no bearing on the use of a bt land line despite how much or little the moblile is used.

Yes - ADSL is the technology used for providing broadband over BT telephone lines.

While the physical telephone line is the same - regardless of the tariff you are on - if you are on the Light User Scheme BT's ordering system will prevent any order for broadband (from any ISP - not just BT) being installed on your line.

Oftel (as were) approved/set these T&C - while I agree the mobile phone one is virtually impossible to enforce.. I don't like to suggest that people be dishonest which must surely also go against the rules of this website.

The other point is the Light User Scheme, regardless of what many people think, is not designed for 'light users' of BT's network - its designed for light users of telecommunications networks in the UK (all of them - including mobiles)

It has to be said though that many people disagree with subsiding 'light users' at all rather than 'low income' users and thats one of the reasons why BT/Ofcom are replacing this tariff with BT Basic which is linked to which benefits you receive.

  • gt94sss2 do you work for telecommunications in some form?
the light user scheme has little to no bearing on ones income threshold it's about being able to recieve a / any service one can at a cheaper price.
bills are expensive enough and it's quite nice to eat once in a while and have something left over to enjoy yourself.
t & c's are all well and good but if you can get around them then so much the better. surely you must relent to the fact that the common usage of mobile phones have had a large inpact on bt (in this instance) so they come up with rules in order to keep gaining multi-millions annually.
