I am trying to get hold of some electronic copies of information. The company that is sending them has tried e-mailing me but that has failed. They have suggested that I get it from their ftp site. They have given me the ftp address in the form of ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx where the x's are digits. They have also given me a user name and password. However, I can't seem to access this. How should I access this? I am using XPhome.

You'll need an FTP client. You can get Filezilla here. This will ask you for an address to connect to. This what the company have given you in the form of an IP address.I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

You can do it from any browser, just use the following format:
ftp://username:password@xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
where x's are your address, and username and password are as given.0 -

Thanks,
I seem to get connected but then get timed out before anything appears.0 -
Firewall could be blocking ftp access. You need ports 20 and 21.0
-
Is that my firewall or theirs?0
-
Probably yours. Have you tried different browsers? Another option would be to try the ftp client, as criminal_smile suggested.
Also, you say connection times out. Do you get an error message? Sometimes ftp sites can take time to load. How long have you waited?0 -
If its connecting then the ports should be open. Personally I'd use a dedicated ftp client like the filezilla suggested - but one more thing to check on your browser (internet explorer i assume) is :-
Select > Tools > Internet Options (options dialgue is displayed)
Select Advanced tab.
Scroll down and ensure the box "Use Passive FTP (for firewall and dsl....)" is ticked. Restart IE and try again.
Hope it works!

We don't know if it's connecting. Even if it does, it would only suggest that the control port is open, not necessarily the data port.
I agree about the ftp client - much better in the long run. However, the original need was to download some files, which could not be sent via e-mail, and for that the full-blown ftp client is a bit of an overkill.
FTP passive - should be on by default in IE (if it's IE).0 -
I have tried using FileZilla and ticking the FTP passive box but still no joy. In the FileZilla dialogue box I get responses;
User name OK, need password
User logged in proceed
Connected
Retrieving directory listing
Various other messages
and then
425 Timeout occured while attempting to connect0
