Main driver and No claim confusion in case of accident

I am the main driver and policy holder. I've added my partner who is learning to drive as the second driver. I was asking my current car insurance company Admiral, if my partner met with a accident would it effect my "No Claim" bonus and the response was irrespective of who ever is driving it will effect me as I am the main driver and policy holder

Is this true with all car insurance company?

  • Yes, if you make an at fault claim on the policy it will impact on your no claims bonus if not protected. Doesn't matter who is driving as the claim is on the policy not the driver.

Your policy so your no claims at risk. If you have protected no claims then it may not apply to a learner or inexperienced driver also.

    Check your policy.

Yes, as the poster above states.

Be aware, even if you protect your NCB and an accident does happen your next years policy will still go up.

    Not sure if I understand.

    If accident did happen
    >my premium next year will go up if I stay with the same insurance company? because they know accident did happen last year?
    >If I request quote from another insurance company following the accident year can I say no accident (because my NCB was protected)

No. Insurance companies will ask about accidents (usually within the last five years) of all drivers, if you lie about this you commit insurance fraud and risk them not paying out in the event of any claim.

Application will say have you had any accidents or claims.

And what is the answer I need to give as a main driver/policy holder if my partner had an accident.

Basically I don't want to up my premium because my partner is learning it is likely an accidents can happen

It does not matter who is driving the claim is on your insurance policy so it has to be declared to any other companies if changing. The wording is as above 'Have you had any accidents or claims'

The answer would be you as the policy holder has claimed and your partner has had an accident.

Protected No Claims DISCOUNT applies to that bit only.

    Example.

Your policy is £100 but you have a 50% NCD so you pay £50

You have a bump. Th policy doubles in price at renewal to £200 but you protected your NCD so you still get 50% off so you pay £100

That make sense? Your NCD is just that, a discount off the overall price of the policy which will go up if you claim, get points etc etc
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
