To address other comments, DLA does not entitle anyone to free prescriptions or bandages and never has.

The only way to get free prescriptions is income based (regardless of disability) or a medical exemption card which is based on certain conditions (regardless of DLA).

Motability cars are leased for over £50 per week, and often attract a deposit, which is non refundable, after the lease.

It's a great charity, but it's not, and never has been "free".

It was bought in to save the government funding the old blue carriages.

People choose their car make now and aren't foced to have a "blue carriage" anymore and get a new car every few years. They get things like new tyres or punctures repaired for free (to them) too as well as all the other running costs.

Hence why so many are upset that PIP means they can't have a mobility car anymore
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

 Don't Motability cars also have blue badges ??

Not in their own right - if a person is getting high rate DLA (mobility component), they have automatic eligibility for a blue badge, and exemption from car tax, but this happens regardless of whether the persons' car is Motability or not. Certain conditions are attached as to who can use the car and for what, with the tax.

PIP, if and when it is rolled out, does still have a mobility component, and the car scheme will continue as now.

Except that some who could easily get a mobility car under DLA, are not allowed one under PIP.

  • I_Love_Shoes,

I appreciate where you are coming from as someone who cares for somebody with additional needs due to their disability.as I am in your boyfriends boat , so to speak! Unfortunately for you, you are doing all yu can and further monetary support for you is not available. However there are some further options for your partner.

DLA does not come near to covering my additional costs directly related to my disabilities, but it does help, and without it we would be financially crippled.

My suggestions for your other half:
    1) speak to his consultant/ specialist nurse about dressings etc. if not his GP may be able to help.
    2) speak to Motability, there may be specific reasons why the car he chose was the only one suitable for his needs. If that is the case then it may be possible to petition for insurance outside normal cases.
    3) if Motability won't budge then he needs to change his vehicle early for one that meets his needs and that of Motability
    4) when your other half is immobilised after an operation and needs to go to hospital appointments he may be entitled to patient transport to attend. He can access this by speaking to his consultant or GP.
    5) if your boyfriend has to give up a room in his home to manage his disability equipment then he may be entitled to apply for a reduction on his council tax.

I don't know why people on here are getting irate about someone with a genuine need, working and paying taxes, housing themselves etc getting DLA enquiring if there is any additional help available.

You sound like a lovely couple, good luck in the future.

The whole purpose of DLA is to help with extra costs they may have because they are disabled. If he needs bandages as a result of his disability, then he should be paying for same from his own DLA money !!

(sorry don't know how to quote previous posts)

This is me except OH cant work due to the state of their health and I work full time and care in the evenings, night and weekends leaving food and drink somewhere accesible along with that days medication.
I wont get any additional help, and despite putting in for PIP for OH in July we are still waiting for a decision.
I work so we dont get help with prescriptions. Your in a slightly better position because he has DLA, Wages and no upkeep to pay on his car you need to find out where his money goes.

That will depend on them fulfilling the criteria for the mobility component, as it does now (although the criteria may change). They are due to review the whole thing with PIP in 2014
