Tesco Hudl v Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7"

I want to get my daughter a tablet for Christmas, so that I can reclaim my iPad!

I have read lots of reviews on techradar & cnet etc and am now just confused!

She is 6 and likes to play games, she is very (too) use to my iPad, so is use to the speed & responsive screen & watching sky go, but I cannot stretch to iPad money for her. I am looking at either the Hudl or Samsung Galaxy tab 2 as I have Tesco vouchers or Agos vouchers that I can put towards the cost.

Any advice/reviews/opinion most welcome.

Thanks

I don't mean to be judgemental but surely she should be doing other things aged 6 than watching Sky Go?!

Beware that she may want access to apps that are not available on Android (which is what Hudl runs on) and may end up borrowing your iPad anyway.
  • We have one telly, so sky go allows her to watch tv if someone else is watching the proper tv - saves on arguments! It doesn't mean she watches tv 24/7.

I will bare in mind the play store v apple App Store availability, thanks.

The Hudl appears to have better specs plus if you have any Tesco points their site says they can be value doubled.

I'll be interested to hear comments on build qualities and responsiveness of any low end 7" tablets as I'm in the market for one too. I haven't looked carefully yet but on specs alone I'm leaning towards the Hudl. The old style Nexus 7 can be had for only £20 more but you could incrementally step up to top of the range with arguments like that and I too would prefer closer to £100 outlay.

Hmmm after starting to read reviews of it I'm getting less keen on the Hudl....
  • I work as a freelance software QA engineer and so have a collection of devices to work with. I recently got a Hudl and have to say I'm rather impressed with it. The Galaxy Tab 2, not so much -- in fact, I just sold mine to a friend this morning!! Overall the Nexus 7 is top of my list, so I would recommend that above all the others. If it's really just between the Hudl or the Samsung, I'd go with the Hudl. But that's just my opinion. :)

Last time I looked there was no compatible Sky Go app for the HUDL.

Scroll down for full list of compatible devices...

The Play store suggests SkyGo can't be installed on my Hudl. Hope that helps.

Appears to be a good tablet for the price. Build quality is very good.

Thanks all. I thought Sky Go was now on android. Didn't realise it varied by device.

Oh I am beginning to think I should reconsider stretching the budget & going for the iPad mini.

Yes, it seems odd. It'll allow it on my Galaxy S2 phone but not the Hudl!

Web User has carried out an appraisal of the Hudl this issue and it appears to be ideal. You may well find more about it within this thread where it is discussed more fully.

One thing you'll find with Android is that not every app will run on every device because Google don't build all the devices as Apple do so the specifications will vary.

There was a deal on at Currys this morning for the Samsung Tab 2 at £99 but now it has gone.
