Texts from "Autotrader" offering to buy my car?

I advertised my car on autotrader and I keep getting texts from them. My iphone says its from "autotrader" so doesnt display the number.

I know better than to contact them but I just wondered if anyone on here had heard of them?

Three texts so far and each one has a different link to contact...

1 - https://www.services-autotrader.com
2- https://www.news-autotrader.com
3 - https://www.promo-autotrader.com

anyone heard of them?

TIA

They'll be scams. Don't respond, just ignore them. Block the numbers if necessary. Unless someone is going to come in person and give cash to buy the car, I personally have nothing to do with them.

Autotrader are a magazine, they don't buy or sell cars.

Anyone can set up a .com that isn't currently in use, it doesn't cost much and there are no checks made until the actual owner of the trademark complains. It might be worth sending an email to Autotrader to let them know, as they're the ones most likely to get the scam sites taken down.

It may be middlemen (agents) they offer to sell your car for a fee, telling you they have lots of people in your area searching for just your type of car. They dont, its a variation on "loan finders" who charge you a fee to look for a loan which never turns up,just ignore them.

They have already been taken down but were very likely to be scam websites which crop up very regularly indeed.

You should have included in your advert, no timewaster, canvasers or texts, the price you are asking for the vehicle should be realistic for a quick enough sale.

Autotrader is no longer a magazine, they are online only.

Because that would have made ALL the difference to these chancers!
  • The advice you will always get from any thread on this Forum is not to reply to ANY text or email sent to you from anyone you have never heard of. 99.999999999999% of them will be either trying to scam you or get their hands on your hard earned cash.

I got a few texts last time I sold my car, just ignore them. Anyone who is genuinely interested in buying your car with real cash will call you.

I got a lot of phone calls from the scammers and got used to the phone numbers....I answered the phone " hello scammer " and talked to them for a few minutes saying "scam" every one word.....very funny....they stopped calling in the end.

  • Thanks all. I knew they were scammers but just wanted a "second opinion" lol

Not having any luck at the moment selling it. Wrong time of year. Only asking a few hundred over the "webuyanycar" price but no takers
