On a similar note - how to stop slugs getting under kitchen door and into kitchen ?

Most mornings find their trails on door mat and found one on the inside of my washing machine door the other morning !

It's an old wooden door and not keen to put slug pellets down as we have a JR.

Perhaps the use of a modern sealing strip under the door. These lock into place. They're really for keeping drafts out but they'll work just as well with slugs.

My ventilator grilles arrived this morning and seem to be just the job. The slugs will soon be banished from under my conservatory.

We did the salt thing. Went through so much of the stuff hoping to eradicate them, simply because the memsahib can't abide them. She behaves like the have huge teeth and can leap six feet. :p

It didn't work though. It did reduce the numbers enough for us to stop "slug watch" for a while but they came back with a vengeance.

Yes the beer point is valid. I object to flippancy on a serious thread however because I'm seeking advice, not jokes. Take the point please and not offence.

i did give you the best of both worlds in one helpful , yet light-hearted post :)

No you didn't actually. You didn't read the OP properly where it clearly stated I was installing mesh grilles to prevent the slugs getting in. I was not seeking advice on how to get rid of them. I was asking if anyone had an idea what might be attracting them.
  • In our old house we used to have them loads in the kitchen and hallway. They came through the hole in the floor where the services came into the house. (gas, water and electricity) In the end we decided to replace the kitchen (completely unrelated to the slugs) only to find that beneath our floor were so many slugs, the conditions were damp and there was so much rubble there that it kept the dampness. We removed all the rubble, replaced the floor completely and that stopped the entire problem. As the conditions underneath the floor were now dry and there was nothing to hold the dampness in, all the slugs vacated within a few days.

So I would suggest going underneath the floor and find out what is causing the slugs to be there. we used to have 10 to 12 slugs in the kitchen at about 1am (nothing during the day or in the morning) and we used to have it every day even though we killed the ones we found, the numbers never went down.

We're not getting them inside the house. Just outside the back door.
  • That is how it started with us, never saw any in the first months we moved in. You did mention they go into the airbricks which suggest they are under the house There might not be holes coming up for them and therefore you won't see them in the house, however if you do not solve the problem, only the symptons it might come back.

Yes, I understand what you say but we've had an inspection and there is nothing to be concerned about. The gully under that floor is sound. Ok the ground surface may be damp but that's what the damp course is for. If we started to notice anything wrong or started to get a smell then we'd get the floor up.
