How much does a litre of drink in a plastic bottle weigh

Often when you go on holiday in Europe in the supermarkets they sell a litre of say Whisky, Brandy or Gin in a plastic bottle. If you decided to bring it home in your "Hold Baggage" (especially as you cannot put it in your cabin baggage), does anyone have any idea how much this bottle would weigh. Certainly considerably less tha the same drink in a glass bottle. Also a plastic bottle is very unlikely to break if it is put in your hold luggage.

I think 1 litre of spirt in a plastic bottle would weigh 1kg

A litre of water weighs 1kg, the spirit may be slightly less then a negligible weight for the plastic bottle
  • Was always told a litre of water is a pint and three quarters. A pint weighs 20 fluid ounces so 35 oz for the liquid and not a huge weight for the plastic bottle!
    Hope that helps!

Alcohol is lighter than water... for all intents and purposes I'd use 1 litre = 1kg

If it were lemonade would it be lighter 'cos it had bubbles of air in ?

I'd say it's a kilo as well. That said, I wouldn't put it in my hold luggage unless it was a particularly sturdy bottle. I once travelled on business with someone who bought some of those plastic bottles and put them in their case and they burst on the way...leaving their luggage rather soggy and stuff ruined by the vodka.

Using vague memory of my CSE chemistry (I got relegated) I believe CO2 is actually heavier than H2O. My best guess is that it would be mighty close though.

Quite happy for somebody with a better qualification to correct me!

The Kilogram was actually originally defined by the weight of water way back when.
It's been an awful long time since I did rudimentary physics and SI units but I seem to recall 1litre of distilled water at 1 atmosphere [sea level, give or take] at 270 kelvin = 1 kilogram

So I reckon you're fairly safe to assume 1 litre of liquid is 1kg as far as airport scales are concerned
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
