Where do I start?

Right then, the whole family have smart phones on contracts. Me, I have an old flip up phone on pay as you go. Suits me to be honest, but the girls all keep telling me I need a smart phone. TBH I only make calls and a bit of internet would be useful. Texting is a waste of life IMO, so it is not important.
I do not really want to tie in to a contract, to me it is just another direct debit. So some sort of pay as you go would suit me. I know my Wife and Daughters will sort me out, but I would like a bit of inside info of my own!;) just so it looks like I get it!

Could any one here point me in the right direction at all please?

  • Heh heh heh, could be me! I've been there, so .....
    Okay .... a smart phone?
For someone not used to them? ;)

In my humble opinion, have a look at Windows phones - like the Nokia 520 for example? See:
    http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/NOKIA_LUMIA_520/PPAY?colourCode=WHITE
Very untuitive and easy-to-use - in my opinion, MUCH easier than an Android phone yet very capable.
After all, if you use Windows on a computer this should be a familiar environment on your phone; it was for me.
    :D

    Then, network for PAYG?
Okay, at the moment and depending upon coverage where you are my choice would be between Ovivo; Giffgaff; and Three's 1-2-3.
All have their positives and their drawbacks, so do a search and look.
For example; in my case, Ovivo (uses Vodafone's network) & after paying initially for your sim, you get 150 minutes and 1000mb of data (plus 250 texts) free every month, AND tariffs outside of allowances are quite cheap.
It's worked out VERY cheap for me. :j

Of course, much depends on YOUR circumstances - how many minutes per month you make on calls (and who to - landlines; mobiles; 0845's etc); how much internet you're likely to use etc.

I hope that gives you a few useful pointers?

100Mb is far too little for a smartphone unless it's almost always on WiFi. In fact it's 500Mb for free at Ovivo, not 100Mb.

Depends on data use & where, if set, as my Nexus is, to use free wifi hubs, like The Cloud, O2, on buses, or at home etc then I have found no problems on Ovivo.

And I only use, as OP is asking, "A bit of internet", like looking up bus times, or BBC news, not Facebooking every minute of the day

Yo! That is a fantastic start, thankyou all so much. I am not a tech head, although I do all this on an i-pod touch, or i-pad.
In the last hour, I have learned that an i-phone is soon to be available as one of my girls has a contract expiring. I am informed that this phone could accept a 'SIM only' contract for about 11 quid PM. And for only a year at a time.

Do any of you have any experience of this set-up?

Have it unlocked while it's still on contract and it will accept any sim card. £11 p.m. can be a too high price to pay for your actual needs.
