..Wanting to purchase a responsibly bred, healthy puppy does not make you a bad person, any more than chosing a rescue makes you morally superior (although this is a myth that the rescue fanatics like to perpetuate)...

...An ill bred, unhealthy, puppy farmed pup is still a puppy farmed pup whether you buy it directly from the farmer or via a rescue (although, allegedly, if you get one from a rescue you also get a free halo to polish ;))...

...And if you want a rescue, go for it - just don't be bullied into it..

Good luck in your hunt, OP. If you find something suitable from a rescue, that's definitely your number one choice. If you can't, definitely go through KC and hunt out a reputable breeder. I bet there's lots of Bichon forums that can give you a whole list of health checks to go through on visits and puppy farm warning signs.

We got our pup from Preloved. A lot of the posts on there are a minefield to be honest and you can see the puppy farms a mile away (Chihuahua pedigree pups £200, pull the other one). We were very lucky with ours, as it was a lovely lady who was having to move house, very reluctant, and wouldn't have the space nor time for him anymore.

I am only waiting for the "get a staffy" brigade to join... despite OP wanting a Bichon...

It is always get a rescue and/or get a staffy - no matter what OP asks on various threads...

The 'OMG why does everybody always bully people into getting a rescue!' posts are just as predictable, lets face it.

Good rescue, good breeder, those are the sensible options, that's what it boils down to.

I'm glad he ended up with you, but really, she could have come up with a better excuse for wanting rid of a chihuahua! :rotfl:

Don't worry folks i will do whats right for my family
we have nobody under 12 here with a reasonable sized garden and someone home most of the day (if not all) due to working patterns so i think we are in pretty good shape to get a dog. On the rescue issue i will look into it and i have taken Chris n tj's kind offer up.
I will continue to look into all the in and outs and make a decision after the new year
thanks again for all your replies :)
