I'd love a rescue dog, but with 2 Grandkids under 5, I have had both mine from reputable breeders. When the kids are older I will definitely rescue

Please stop trying to put people off at least considering rescues!
Glad it worked for you and your dog.
But please do not insinuate I am trying to put people off - if one can get a rescue dog, go for it.
But pls do not make it sound like one can just walk into one, pick a dog and walk out.0 -

Well, at Manchester Dogs Home you can do exactly that...
I don't understand why you post this stuff on every thread about rescue if you don't want to put people off from even trying. You don't say it might be tricky, or that they might get some rejections, you say its practically impossible and recommend Gumtree!
Sorry, but I don't think that's terribly responsible.0 -

No one should ever be able to walk in pick a dog and walkout FULL STOP
No reputable breeder will ever let a puppy go to a home which doesn't meet their criteria, and no rescue centre should do so either.
More often than not rescue dogs become rescue dogs because the prospective owners weren't vetted correctly in the first place.
I'm sorry that you feel so hard done by for being turned down by a rescue centre because you work and live in a flat, but to be honest there are not a lot of breeds out there that are suitable for situations such as yours.0 -

Oh really?
Say that to my GS and my 6 cats.....wish they could speak and tell you how unhappy and neglected they are and how much would they prefer a life behind bars...
And yes, I wanted a GS or a GS cross and did not pay any attention to people telling me what dog was "suitable" for me as I knew what I wanted in a dog and what dog will be the best match for me - away from a box ticking exercise.0 -
I did not recommend Gumtree, I am saying where I got my cats and my dog. That is different.
And quite frankly it winds me up when every thread started by someone looking for a dog ends up with people "go rescue" - not everyone's circumstances allow that, for many reasons so nobody should feel guilty about wanting to get a dog that is not from a rescue.0 -
If you see a private ad on Gumtree, check to see if the advertiser has previous advertised other puppies - a warning signal for puppy farms.
Also insist on seeing the puppy with its mum. If they say mum is put for a walk or away somewhere, don't buy - it's a puppy farm using a private house as a front.0 -

Wholeheartedly agree with this :T.
Once again a thread about wanting advise on the best place to buy a puppy has been derailed by the rescue fanatics .
Did you even bother to read the title of the OP before rushing to climb on your soapboxes??? The question was about wanting advise on the best place to buy a puppy so that they can specifically avoid puppy farmed or badly bred, sickly puppies.
Wanting to purchase a responsibly bred, healthy puppy does not make you a bad person, any more than chosing a rescue makes you morally superior (although this is a myth that the rescue fanatics like to perpetuate).
As has already been pointed out, Bichons are one of the most "farmed" breeds out there, so there is a pretty high chance that any rescued pup will not have had the best start in life anyway. An ill bred, unhealthy, puppy farmed pup is still a puppy farmed pup whether you buy it directly from the farmer or via a rescue (although, allegedly, if you get one from a rescue you also get a free halo to polish).
3leigh, as has already been said, I would start with the breed clubs (you can get details of those from the Kennel Club website). Research any health problems and find out what tests should be done on the prospective parents. Don't be afraid to approach multiple breeders for advice. Try to visit the Discover Dogs section at Crufts where you can meet lots of Bichons and talk to other enthusiasts about them. Take up chris n tj's offer of an introduction to their breeder - she will be a valuable source of advice, even if you want to puchase elsewhere, as she will probably know of responsible breeders in your area. Research, research and research some more! The more knowledge you have about the breed the better armed you are to make the right choice.
And if you want a rescue, go for it - just don't be bullied into it.
Good luck.

I am only waiting for the "get a staffy" brigade to join... despite OP wanting a Bichon...
It is always get a rescue and/or get a staffy - no matter what OP asks on various threads...0 -
Please consider cat and dog home and the pound. I actually got a pedigree kitten from cat protection league a few years ago and my friend got a dalmation from cat and dog home so even if you want pedigrees its worth a look. Better than a puppy farm!0
