If you buy a nexus 7 and your films are on an external usb drive then using something called a usb OTG cable (very cheap to buy) you can play your films very easily. http://carman58.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-use-external-memory-on-the-Nexus-7-WITHOUT-rooting

I use this with my Nexus 7 and it works really well. Cable from Amazon was just over £2 and then download the app. Very straightforward.

Like any Android tablet it will play downloaded video files, no data connection (ie wifi, 3G) needed just for playing them back.

What videos do you want to watch? Is it catch up TV like iplayer? itv player? youtube? because some apps wont let you download it to your device, only streaming.

    >>>Catchup TV no download .

    >>>Downloaded movies that you have already downloaded at home over wifi YES

    You say
    I don't want a data contract.

I want to watch movies whilst travelling.

    >> Then you require the movies to be already downloaded to your machine .

With a WiFi connection you may be able to stream movies on the move dependant upon signal /Or watch download via hotel WiFi.

BBC iplayer allows you to download on android devices now, even kindle fire.

As for playing films, are you talking films you have bought or downloaded from other sites. As said above, films can be transferred over to kindle to play back.
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j

But if you want to stream you can only do it via wi-fi or a mobile data connection. To watch films on a plane you need to download the film beforehand and then just play it back, since neither data connection is available. That isn't streaming, it's just playing a video. Which any tablet will do.
However if you want to connect where there is no local wi-fi hotspot, you'll need a 3G tablet with a data SIM on PAYG or contract.
Why not just watch one of the multitude of movies supplied by the airline instead?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
