Wing Mirror keeps being damaged on purpose

  • Its a smallish van and not much bigger than a regular sized car. he has had it for a few years. may have to pay attention to dee whether it only happens when he is in certain spaces..
  • Interesting about the filming. I think my dad will do it even if I told him MSE'ers advised me it is illegal! lol

I imagine any filming couldn't be used evidentially but at the moment its just to identify the perp.
  • I had a similar problem a few years back, where someone was putting nails/screws in my tyres. I lived in a road with terraced cottages and parking was a nightmare, so I think someone had a bee in their bonnet about where I was parking my car (I was very careful not to obstruct anyone). I would give the CCTV a go, at least you'll know who the culprit is.

Definitely use cctv, and if you recognise the culprit, then just ask them to stop breaking it, and hand them the repair bill with 14 days to pay.

If they refuse, then tell them if you haven't received payment in 14 days, you will give the cctv to the police.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

My dad had a similar problem a few years back... he brought a fake camera, with a flashing led, pointed it at his car and it soon stopped. Think it cost him around £20

I had my wing mirror knocked off a few times, once bad enough to need a £200 replacement and repair. Even though it was permit parking, someone had decided one bit of the road was theirs. Once I twigged I avoided parking there, but I wish I'd done something to stop them from their vandalism.

Its not illegal to film in public, he could either place a cctv camera in his van or on his house aiming at it.;)

When you say near your house, is it close enough that a webcam or CCTV system can view the van? If not, the dashcam is a great idea.

My mum and dad's house used to be in a very quiet area, but it was always well-known as being a 'stumble home' route. They used to get their windows smashed a lot by errant beer bottles, but so did a lot of people on the route. All the householders informed the Police iirc and they put some PCSO patrols on at the time of night it was happening, but can't do that if it's only your dad's car!

Make sure he folds the wing mirror in as well, then you can be sure it's not an accident when said culprit unfolds the mirror to knock it off!

But probably annoying someone by parking outside their windows/house. I wouldn't want someones 'smallish van' parked outside mine either. Does he have a driveway? Sounds a daft question but you'll be surprised the number of folk who have empty driveways but park on the road.

Whilst it may be annoying to someone the op's dad is doing nothing illegal by parking a roadworthy, tax and insured car on the road- and however annoying this can be it does not justify the vehicle being damaged 4 times!!!

OP- I do hope you manage to get this issue sorted. I would probably go for cctv- but in the meantime I would just keep a record of where it is being parked and see if a pattern occurs.
