A few weeks ago I bought a Samsung S3 mini. I was happy with it with the exception of battery life which seemed very short . Then last week I got an automatic upgrade. In the past couple of days I have noticed a huge improvement. Has anyone else found this ? Is it due to the upgrade?

One battery calibrates itself with use and two upgrades may well increase battery life all depends upon what upgrade .

I don't know the details of the update. It was the one which the phone told me to download on Thursday. Since writing this I have spoken to someone else who bought an S4 just after I got mine. He has also experienced an improvement this week.

Mobile network configuration can have HUGE impact to battery life. Not only signal strength - which is pretty obvious, but also many small settings they can change to tweak network performance.
Just small example: one of the basic settings is period of time between re-logging to mobile network. Basically is just a time after the phone need to say "hello, I'm still here" to mobile network again. Changing this value can affect battery life up to 15%. Just one, small settings.
Same on phone/applications side. Changing e-mail download rate from "push/when arrive" to "every 15 minutes" can increase battery life up to 40%!!!! And difference - in normal life - is very hard to notice.
